ROuSSEAu’S CIVIL RELIgIOn AnD THE CASE OF TuRKEY

SUMMARY

The concept of “civil religion,” which Rousseau discussed in the Social Contract, was revived in the twentieth century by the American sociologist Robert Bellah. One typical case mentioned in the sociology of religion literature influenced by Bellah’s conception of civil religion has been the Turkish one. The ideology of Kemalism, due to its strong emphasis on laicism and nationalism, has been viewed as an example of civil religion. A common feature of the academic literature on the Turkish case is the oversight of Rousseau’s conception of civil religion. This study examines the interpretation of Kemalism as civil religion in light of Rousseau’s conception of civil religion.

Keywords: Rousseau, Bellah, Durkheim, Kemalism, civil religion
