FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS SELECTION

USING AHP AND FUZZY PROMETHEE APPROACH

Abstract

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) are considered to be advanced manufacturing technologies to improve flexibility and quality, reduce work-in-process (WIP), inventory levels, manufacturing lead-times, and set up costs of a manufacturing company. Therefore, selecting the most appropriate flexible manufacturing system has emerged as the critical issue for the success of companies. FMS selection can be viewed as a multi-criteria decision making problem due to the availability of quantitative and qualitative criteria that have to be considered in the decision-making process. For these reasons, integrated fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (FMCDM) methodology has been proposed and an illustrative example is presented. For this purpose, we have selected four main and

twelve sub-criteria through literature review. Then, all the weights of criteria have been calculated by applying the AHP method. The fuzzy PPROMETHEE method is then employed to achieve the final ranking results. Five representative flexible manufacturing systems were evaluated and the most appropriate one was selected.
