ter ile Helmuth Cuno’dur. Açılış töreni, ikinci Meşruti
yetin ilanını izleyen günlerde 19 ağustos 1908’de yapı
lan binanın dış cephesi taraklanmış kumtaşı ile kaplı
dır. Ana cephe, 1100 ahşap kazık üzerine temellendiril-
miştir. Arduvaz kaplı dik çatıyla 6 katlı garın iç mekân
ları; çapraz ve kaburgalı tonozları, köşe odaları, dola
ma dal motifli kartuş ve girlandları, vitrayları ile dikkati
çeker.
Rıhtımdan mermer merdivenlerle çıkılan platformda
yükselen ana cephe; dairemsi köşe kuleleri, bu kulele
rin sivri külahları, alınlık görünümlü saat kulesi, Barok
bezemeleri, balkonlu pencereleri, kat kornişleri ve pi-
lastralarıyla etkileyicidir.
Trenle Anadolu’dan gelen insanların İstanbul’la ilk ta
nıştıkları; bu büyüleyici kentten ayrılanların da türlü
duygularla son kez baktıkları bu büyük gar, 1908’den
1960’lara kadar unutulmaz olaylara ve anılara tanık ol
muştur. Birinci Dünya Savaşı yıllarındaki asker sevkiya-
tı, 1917’deki gar infilâki, Atatürk’ün İstanbul’a geliş gi
dişlerinde yaşanan coşkulu karşılama ve uğurlamalar
bunlardandır. Son yıllarda ulaşım karayollarına kay
dığından Haydarpaşa Garı, eski önemini yitirmekle bir
likte İstanbul’un Anadolu yakası silüetinde Selimiye
Kışlası ve Haydarpaşa Tıp Mektebi binasıyla birlikte
anıtsal üç yapıdan biridir.

A m on u m e n t to th e clo s e T u rk ish Germ an rela tiom o f the time, the station is in neo-renaissance style and has a U-plan. The inaugura tio n cerem on y took p la ce on 19 A u g u s t 1908, ju s t a fte r th e p ro c la m a tio n o f th e S econ d Constitution. The fa ca d e is revetted in textured sandstone, and the m ain fa ca d e overlooking Kadıköy Bay rests on a fou n d a tion o f 1100 tim ber piles. The steep pitch ed ro o f is slated, a n d the inte rio r is decorated with tra ilin g folia g e cartouches and garlands, and stained glass windows. The ceilin g o f the circu la r m om at the base o f the southeast tow er has ribbed vaults, and the upper landings have g ro in vaults.

This splendid station build ing welcomes those a rrivin g in Istanbul fro m A n atolia by train, a nd is the last sight o f this enchanting city f o r those leaving with a m ixtu re o f em otions. Since 1908 Haydarpaşa Station has witnessed m any m em orable events, both tra gic a n d joy fu l. D u rin g W orld W ar 1 troops boarded trains f o r the fro n t fro m here, m any never to return, a n d in 1917 it was badly dam aged in a bom b attack. Exuberant crowds welcomed A tatürk here on m any occasions when he arrived fro m Ankara. Although with the increase in road transport and the advent o f motorways Haydarpaşa Station has lost its fo rm e r im portance, this m agnificent building is still a landm ark on the Asian show o f the city, tog eth er w ith th e n earby S elim iy e B a rra cks (o f Florence N ightingale fa m e ) and Haydarpaşa M edical School.
