Sir,
I have just read with great Interest your book "Gallipoli' I too had an uncle who had "served and suffered” there during May-August In 1915* I still have little diary book and could
compare some of his notes with the events mentioned in. your book.
It is sad to think that; the "blunder” was repeated a few years later when tlie allies sent the Creek army into Anatolia and caused Indescribable suffering, torture, and attrocities,
I want to send the translation of a poem written for the Turkish soldiers killed at Çanakkale, It is a beautiful poem, though it loses a great deal in being translated. Most pe&ple know it by heart, and it is recited during religious or military ceremonies in schools and mosques, and on the
rv
adio. Please excuse me for assuming that you have not read this poem before, O u page 335 of "Gallipoli” we read: "For the Turks find all thid devotion to the dead very strange," This poem expresses the depth of the gratitude felt by the Turkish nation for the heroic men, almost one from every home, who gave their lives to save their country which was in such a desperate
situation.
I do hope our rations will be on the same side in the future in the fight against the evil forces In the world.
Please accept my congratulations for your fascinating book.
