rin d ek i b iricik anıt-sütun olan Çemberlitaş, İstan b u l’daki tarihi eserlerin en eski lerindendir. İm parator Kons- tantinos I (324- 337) sütunun üs tü ndeki A p o llo n heykelini indirte rek yerine kendi heykelini koydurt muştu. Dorik baş lığı, porfir kaidesi ile 57 metre yük s e k liğ in d e k i bu m eydan anıtının heykeli ve başlığı 1081 yılında isabet eden bir yıldırımla yıkıldı. Aleksios I. Komnenos (1081- 1118) sütunun üs tüne y a ld ız lı bir
haç koydurttu. T ü rk lerin uzun zaman Dikilitaş, AvrupalIların ise Yanık Sütun (Colonne Brulee) dedikleri anıt, İstanbul yangınlarından ve deprem lerinden zarar gördü.
Evliya Ç eleb i’ye göre halk Çem berlitaş’ı kenti koruyan tılsımlardan saymaktaydı. 1701’de, kaidesi taş duvar örülerek, sütun da d em ir ç e m b e rle rle ta k viye ed ild i.
Çemberlitaş adını bundan sonra aldı. •

The ta ll c o l umn held together by iro n bands s in ce a succession o f f ir e s a n d earthquakes brought it close to col lapse still stands near the edge o f this road. Known as the Burnt C o lu m n to E u ro p e ans, it is one o f the oldest monuments in Is ta n b u l. W ith the acceptance o f Chris tia n ity by the Romans, Constantine the Great (3 2 4 -3 37) replaced the statue o f A p o llo w hich o n ce surmounted it by his own statue. This stat ue and the D oric cap ital were destroyed by a bolt o f ligh ten in g in 1081. The B yzan tine emperor Alexius 1 Komnenos (1081-1118) had a gilded cross placed on top o f the 57 metre high column. According to the 17th century Turkish writer Evliya Çelebi, the fate o f Istanbul was pop ularly believed to be closely bound up with that o f the column, which may be why such efforts were expended to keep it erect.
