'I sat in Rumeli Hisan / I sat and sang a song,..' So says the poet Orhan Veli in his poem Song o f Istanbul, which he later said was written in a state o f 'indescribable grief. It tells o f the profound loneliness o f one period in his life, o r perhaps, who knows, all o f it. It seems as if everyone but the poet has a friend o r lover to talk to, tell their troubles and cheer them up, W hile he, the loneliest man o f all, wanders amongst the
graves on th e h ill side above Rumelihisarı, talking to th e gulls and p o u rin g o u t his thoughts to them. R um elihisarı does n o t have such melancholy associa tions for most o f us though. Years later when I decided to visit the district again, I felt a vague sense o f jealousy. It was no longer ‘mine’ o r 'ours', but İstanbul’un fethi hazırlıkları sırasında, Sultan II. Mehmed tarafından İstanbul Boğazı’nın kolaylıkla de

Hisarı yıllar sonra yeniden gezmeye karar verdiğimde
içimde kıskançlığa benzer belli belirsiz bir his vardı. Ar

li, biraz gizemli. Sahilde cıvıltılı ve coşkulu, ara sokak
larda durgun ve huzurlu. Önde restore edilmiş yalılar,

N o w throughout the summer con certs are held in the great castle whose walls sweep up the hillside overlooking the Bosphorus, and they have trans formed the low er part o f Rumelihisan into a brightly lit, lively and crowded place. But I found that there was no need to regret the changes. The castle itself was still the same, and the tea garden which had opened in place o f the coffee

The district o f Rumelihisarı which has such an important place in the memories o f my youth lies on the European shore o f the Bosphorus between Baltalimam and Bebek. It is as exu berant and lively as Bebek by the shore and as peaceful and self-contained as Baltalimam in the back streets. The elegant

II. Mahmud kayıkla sahilden geçerken bu yalıyı görüp
çok beğenmiş, hatta satın almak istemiş. Ancak kendisi

Semt, Türklerin Rumeli yakasında ilk yerleştikleri, me

The area is so steep that some o f the streets are flights o f steps, and if you climb these you discover marvellous views over th e Bosphorus. O th e r streets are lined by high walls and seem to isolate you in their own world, as if you were nei th e r within nor completely outside time.
One o f the most famous buildings here is the 18th century Yılanlı Yah - House o f Snakes. An interesting story is connect ed with this name. A bout tw o centuries ago Sultan Mahmud II was passing by in his royal barge when he saw this house, and liked it so much that he decided to buy it. But one o f his companions knew the owner and, reluctant to see his friend lose his house, dissuaded the sultan from this plan by claiming that the house was infested with snakes. Ever since it has been known as the House o f Snakes.
Rumelihisan is the place where the Turks first settled on the European side o f Istanbul and is noted fo r its many historic buildings. Undoubtedly the most celebrated o f these is the hisar (fortress) after which the district is named. W hen Sultan Mehmed II was preparing fo r the conquest o f Istanbul, he had this castle built so as to control shipping along the Bosphorus. Contemporary sources record that a thousand stonemasons and over tw o thousand labourers worked on its construction,

which was completed in just fo u r months. The plan was drawn by the sultan himself and the architect was Musliheddin, The three towers at the comers were built by the sultan’s vezirs Halil Paşa, Zağanos Paşa and Saruca Paşa. O f the mosque built by Sultan Mehmed II inside the castle, only the low er part o f the minaret remains today. The amphitheatre here was constructed in 1953. Evliya Çelebi relates the follow ing story about the castle: W hen Sultan Mehmed decided to take Istanbul, using the pretence o f his passion fo r hunting he asked the Byzantine em peror fo r permission to build a hunting lodge on the site. The emperor agreed on the condition that the hunting lodge be not larger than a cow's hide. The sultan had a hide cut up into very narrow strips, which were then joined together and used to measure o u t th e ground plan o f th e fo rtre ss. Meanwhile, o f course, he was busy with preparations for the coming siege. The story is pure legend, o f course, being to o similar fo r coincidence to the myth o f Dido and the founding o f the city o f Carthage,
As evening fell a light breeze began to blow o ff the sea, calling me down to the shore. By now I felt quite at home again. The horns o f the ferries, cheerful voices, and the chinking o f glass es and plates mingled in the dusk. A fte r a ten year absence I
had rediscovered Rumelihisarı in a single wonderful day. •
