INTRoDUCTIoN Becomingpopularandbeingsociallyacceptedisamongadolescents,especiallywiththetechnological developments,cyberbullying(Reynold&Repetti,2010;Werner&Hill,2010)isatypeofelectronic aggression,andhasnegativeconsequencesbothinTurkeyandthroughouttheworld.Understandingthe risksandprotectivefactorsofcyberbullyinghasrecentlybecomethefocusofpsychologicalresearch duetoitsadverseeffects.Researchduringthepasttwodecadeshasemphasizedsocio-cognitive processesaffectingantisocialbehavior,eitherinafacilitatingway,suchasmoraldisengagement (Menesini,etal.2003)andenhancingprosocialbehavior(Warden&Mackinnon,2003),suchas empathy.Forthisreason,inthisstudy,thebehaviorofcyberbullyinginadolescentsisbeexamined inrelationtomoraldisengagementandempathictendency. Cyberbullyingisdescribedasintentional,repetitive,andhostileaggressionamongadolescents throughelectronicmedia(Smith&Slonje,2010).Ejectingindividualsfromchatroomswithout reason,secretlytakingshamefulphotosofsomeone,preparingwebsitesdiscreditingorembarrassing someone,addingoffensive,insulting,orthreateningmessagesorpicturestoavictim’swebsiteor blogs,sharinginappropriateimagesonline,andspreadingrumorsaboutsomeoneareamongthe mostcommonexamplesofcyberbullying(Hinduja&Patchin,2010;Topçu,2008;Moses,2013). Cyberbullyingresultsinadverseconsequencesinphysical,psychological,andacademicareas.Its resultsincludehigherabsenteeratesinschools,excusemakingfornon-attendanceatschool(Katzer, etal.2009),lowgrades(Beran&Li,2008),lowself-esteemandhighdepressionlevels(Ybarraet al.,2006)andattemptedsuiciderates(Hinduja&Patchin,2010;Schneideretal.,2012).Compared totraditionalbullying,cyberbullyingmayhurtvictimsmuchseverelysinceitcanhappenatanytime

Regardedasanimmoralbehavior,cyberbullyingwasassociatedwithmoraldisengagement (Hinduja&Patchin,2010).ThetermmoraldisengagementwasaddressedbyBandurainhissocial-cognitivetheoryofthemoralself(Bandura,1991).Moraldisengagementisaninternalcognitive mechanismwhichdeactivatescognitiveinternalcontrolinordertominimizethemoraleffects ofimpairingbehaviorsandavoidmoralself-sanctions(Bandura,1991).AccordingtoBandura, individualsrationalizeaggressivebehaviorsbyactivatingmoraldisengagementmechanismsto avoidnegativeself-sanctionswhentheybehaveimmorally(Bandura,2002).Thisprocessenables theindividualtoreasonhis/herimmoralbehaviorsortoallowhis/herinappropriatebehaviorstobe acceptedmoreeasily(Gibbs,Potter,&Goldstein,1995).Cyberbulliesusecognitivereasoningand rationalizationtostartandmaintaintheiraggressivebehaviors(Pornari&Wood,2010).Theymakeuse ofmoraldisengagementmechanismsbyisolatingtheirvictims,inhumanetreatment,intimidationand controllingthebehaviorsoftheirvictims(Bandura,2002;Hinduja&Patchin,2010).Theelectronic mediaisfrequentlyusedbyindividualswithhighermoraldisengagementbehaviorsbecauseofits anonymityandopportunitytoavoidface-to-faceinteractionwithvictims(Pornari&Wood,2010). Acyberbullyactsbothimmorallywithoutfeelingguilty(Slonje&Smith,2008)andusescognitive strategiesinordernottotakemoralresponsibility(Almeidaetal.,2008),sinceinteractionthrough theelectronicmediaallowsforcommunicationwithoutdirectcontact. Empathicpersonalitytraithasbeenthefocusofresearchasoneoftheprotectivefactorsof bullying.Empathyisconsideredtobeafactorthatcaninhibitantisocialbehaviorandfacilitate prosocialbehavior(Wang,Lei,&Zhao,2017;Warden&Mackinnon,2003),andisanimportant constructtoassesswhenexaminingbullyingbehavior.Bandura(1986)identifiedempathyasan importantfactorinsocialcognition,influencingone’sabilitytorecognizeandreactappropriately toemotionspresentedbyothers.Asadimensionofempathy,emphatictendencyisdefinedasthe potentialofformingempathyofpeopleintheirdailylivesandsocialsensitivity(Dökmen,1988). Anempathictendencyismostlyrelatedtoanindividual’spotentialtounderstandandfeelthe experiencesandemotionsofothersandconstitutesthebasisofempathicabilities(Dökmen,1994). Theliteratureemphasizesthenegativerelationshipbetweenempathictendencyandbullying(Slonje etal.,2012;Steffgenetal.,2011;Tangneyetal.,2007;Topçu,2008).Ahigherempathictendency reducesaggressionsinceitmakesitpossibletoanticipatepossibleharmsgiventoothers(Tangney etal.,2007).Alowerempathictendency,ontheotherhand,isseenasariskfactorfortraditionaland cyberbullying(Steffgenetal.,2011).Ithasbeendeterminedinstudiesthatindividualswhowere bulliesandwhodemonstratedthecharacteristicsofvictimswerelessempathicanddisplayedcyber bullyingbehaviorsmoreoften(Renatietal.,2012;Steffgenetal.,2011;Stavrinidesetal.2010).It isalsoassertedthatavirtualenvironmentdecreasesempathiccommunicationsinceitisunableto receivenonverbalclues,suchasfacialexpressions,whichrevealthefeelingsorreactionsofaperson (Ang&Goh,2010)andlackofimmediatereaction(Steffgenetal.,2011).Withrespecttoallof theseexplanations,itcanbesaidthatavirtualenvironmentisfrequentlypreferredbythosewhose empathictendencyislowandhaveatendencyforaggressivebehaviors. Therelationshipbetweenempathyandmoraldisengagementhasbeenthefocusofespecially bullyingandcyberbullyingresearch.Empathyisanessentialelementforpro-socialbehaviour(Wang, Lei,&Zhao,2017)andmoraldevelopmentisriskfactor(Wang,Lei,&Zhao,2017)inbullying andcyberbullying.Recentstudiesfoundthatlackofempathy(Renatietal.,2012;Steffgenetal., 2011)andhighMD(Kyriacou,2016;Meters,2018;Runions,2015)assistscyberbullyingbehavior. Moreover,instudiesfocusingonbothvariables,itwasfoundthatthelackofempathyincreased moraldisengagementandcyberbullyingbehaviors(Kokkinos&Kipritsi,2018;Postorino,2014; vanNoorden,Haselager,Cillessen,&Bukowski,2015;Zelidman,2014).
