ACTIVITIES IN PEACEFUL USES OF NUCLEAR ENERGY

IN UZBEKISTAN

B. Yuldashev

President, Academ y o f Science, Uzbekistan

The research in the fields o f nuclear physics and the aspects o f its peaceful application are carried out in U zbekistan for m ore 5 0 years and covers the following areas:

• High energy physics

• Elem entary particle physics • N uclear physics

• Radiation physics o f solid state • Radiation m aterial science • A ctivation analysis

• Radiochem istry and isotope production • N uclear instrum entation developm ent

This w ork are based on the following facilities:

• 10 M W t w ater-w ater reactor. It has 40 vertical and 9 horizontal channels w ith neutron flux in range from -1012 - 1014 neutrons ■ cm-2- sec-1 , the reactor is operating m ore than 6000 hours a year.

• Cyclotron U -150, has 150 cm magnet, and accelerates protons, deuterons and 3He nuclei (accelerated protons w ith energies o f up to 20 MeV, deuterons up to 24 MeV, -particles up to 50 M eV and 3He nuclei are accelerated up to 35 MeV, m axim al flux 800M kA)

• Cyclotron U -115 accelerates protons up to energies o f 20 M eV w ith flux o f 800M kA. It w as built by the experts o f INP and JINR, Dubna, Russia

• Electron accelerators m icrotron, betatron, linear accelerators w ith m axim al energy up to 50 M eV and flux up to 30 M kA

• Powerful irradiation-facility based on 60Co o f the total activity o f 130 000 Ci.

• N eutron generator, operating in two energy ranges o f energy.Powerful neutrons sources based on the C f and Sb.

In addition, our physicists participate in the experim ents on high energy physics carried out at international acceleration facilities such as CERN, FNAL, TRIUM F, JIN R in Dubna.

Physicists from U zbekistan tightly w ork in collaborations w ith scientists o f different countries and are the participants o f various experim ental and theoretical collaborations. Republic o f U zbekistan is the full m em ber o f Joint Institute o f N uclear Research.

Every year our scientists publish m ore than 100 works in w ell know n physics journals. They actively participate in the international conferences and seminars as w ell as in the issues concerning nonproliferation programs.

U zbekistan, being the full m em ber o f IAEA, has signed the non-proliferation treaty and additional protocol to the agreem ent and tightly involved in the projects w ith IA EA and a num ber o f international organizations.

Institute o f N uclear Physics o f the A cadem y o f Sciences o f the Republic o f U zbekistan and its enterprises "Radiopreparat" and "Tezlatgich" are in the top ten o f the m ost internationally fam ous com panies producing reactor and cyclotron isotopes.

N uclear m ethods in U zbekistan are w idely used in diagnostics and treatm ent o f various diseases, in technology, industry, agriculture and w hen dealing w ith ecological problems m ining, crim inalistics, border control etc.

There are m any Institutions and U niversities preparing experts and specialists in the area o f nuclear sciences. The m ost famous are N ational U niversity o f U zbekistan, Sam arkand State U niversity, Bukhara State University, Tashkent Polytechnic U niversity and many others.

The Institute o f N uclear Physics, being one o f the largest research organizations in Central Asia, has 24 laboratories w ith staff o f m ore than 300 scientists including 48 D octors (Full Professors) and 165 Candidates o f Science (PhD). In total, there are m ore than 1000 em ployees w orking in the Institute.

Every tw o years w e are organizing biannual International conference “M odern Problem s ofN uclear Physics”, w hich covers a w ide scope o f topics: fundam ental and applied nuclear physics, physics o f elem entary particles, astrophysics, radiation physics o f condensed m atter and m aterial sciences, instrum ental activation analysis, and also nuclear devices and radiation detectors. It helps to broaden and strengthen our international collaboration both in fundam ental science and applied researches followed by com m ercial partnership.

A s a result o f such sensible policy, A cadem y o f Sciences and the Institute o f N uclear Physics o f U zbekistan have been appreciated in the w orld for sequential m easurem ents to m aintain non-proliferation status in the Central A sia region and keep up the m odern scientific and technical progress w ith clear social orientation and goal o f prosperous future.
