HACI FERRUH MESCİDİ
Ö m ü r B A K İ R E R

2. Pencereler
îç kapımn iki kenarındaki 1.05 m. açıkhkta, 1.00 m. derinlikteki dikdört gen pencerelerin üst kısımlannda sivri kemerli alınlıklar yer alır ve cephedeki pencerelere benzerlik gösterir.
B. Harım
6.85x6.85 m. ölçülerindeki kare plânlı harimin kuzey ve batı duvarla rında zeminden başlayan ve 1.50 m. ka dar yükselen, .15 m. genişlikte bir çı kıntı mevcuttur. Güney duvanndaki küçük tepe penceresinden başka du varlarda hiçbir açıkhk yoktur.
Kare alt yapının köşelerine yerleş tirilen dört geniş tromp ile kubbenin dairevî kasnağına geçilir (Resim I I ) .
mından mihraptaki mukamaslarla mu kayese edilebilirler (Resim: 13).

THE MESCİD OF HACI FERRUH
Hacı Ferruh Mescidi is in Konya, Aksinne Mahallesi, Taş Cami Caddesi, in the immediate vicinity of the large Sahip Ata complex^
This building is also called Taş Cami, since both its exterior and inte rior are completely faced with cut sto nes; and Akçe Gizlenmez Mescidi, after an anectode originating from its time of construction which complements the fine stoneworkmanship of the mes cidi
Besides the well known and much discussed larger stmctures of the X I I I . th. century, small mescids such as Ha cı Ferruh are abundantly distributed all over the city of Konya, with at least one or two in every neighbourhood. While most of them still retain their original characteristics, a few others are hardly distinguished from the hou ses that surround them.
According to their plans, these mescids can be divided into two groups:
1. The prayer hall is a single unit and has a square plan, surmounted with a dome'.
2. The domed, square prayer hall is preceded by a second unit, which is either a closed vestibule or a colonna ded portico*.
The plan of Hacı Ferruh Mescidi, falls in the second group and it can be mentioned as one of the earliest and best preserA^ed examples among them. The building is definitely dated by its inscription panel inserted above the entrance portal (Pl.4).This inscription, in Arabic, consists of five lines which state that the mescid was donated by Hacı Ferruh bin Abdullah, in 612 H. -A.D. 1215, during the reign of îzzeddin Keykâvüs, son of Giyaseddin Keyhiis-rev^
A second inscription panel is pla ced above the lintel of the inner portal, which leads into the main prayer hall
(PI. 8). This one does not contain any dates, but in the first two lines it gives the name of the architect as «Ramazan

/. PLAN
The overall plan of the mescid is a rectangle comprising a square pra yer hall and the vestibule (Fig. 1). The interior mesurements of the prayer hall are 6.85x6.85 m. This is preceded, on the east, by a closed vestibule mea suring 3.57X6.85 m. The east wall of the prayer hall serves as a partition between these two spaces. It is pierced with a portal and two windows, exactly following the facade scheme. The scale and decoration of this inner portal has the same character as the entrance portal, thus giving the impression that the prayer hall and the vestibule were planned singly with their own entran ces. Despite their juxtaposition they re main distincly seperate. It is apparent that the problem of merging the main prayer hall with the vestibule as one unit, whilst creating a close link bet ween them is not yet solved. This in ternal seperation of the mescid is not apparent on the exterior, where the walls extend uniformly without a brake to mark the dividing line of the two spaces'.
Although the building does not now have a minaret, on the South-East cor ner of the vestibule there isa passage

I n other mescids w h i c h have a clo sed vestibule,, like B a ş a r a b e y and K a r a t a y , the p r a y e r hall and the vestibule are simi l a r l y separated from one another i n the in terior, eventhough this seperation is not mar ked on the exterior. However, in B e y h e k l m and T a h i r ile Z ü h r e , built during the last q u a r t e r of the X H I th. century the vestibule has a closer relationship w i t h the p r a y e r halL
and a flight of steps built in the thick ness of the wall. It has been assumed that originally this staircase led to the minaret'. This assumption can be ac cepted since in other mescids, whene ver a portico or a vestibule precedes the prayer hall (e.g. in the Zemburi mescidi, Sırçalı Mescid and Hoca Ha san Mescidi), there is a minaret flan king the South-East or the North-East corner of the vestibule.
II. EXTERIOR
At present the mescid has some what lost its original appearance. The original upper structure, which most probably was a dome, as in all the rest of the mescids, has apparently collap sed, and replaced with the presen; flat roof. This covering gives the buil ding a very massive, rectangular block like form (PL 1)'". There are no pro jections or recessions to alter it, exept on the South Wall where the mihrap protrudes slightly. At the top it prt. jects 10 cm. increasing downward !o about 60 cm. to accomodate a second smaller niche placed within the first mihrap niche (Fig. 1).
A. Walls
As stated above, the articulation of the interior spaces is not revealec' on the exterior of the walls which

large, rectangular blocks of finely cut and jointed «Gödene Taşı», producing a smooth surface texture'-. On the up permost section of the walls, the two rows of stones, lighter in shade, and the water spouts are later additions. Except for the single window opening on the upper part of the South wall, the other three walls are not perfora ted with windows. They rise uniformly,
increasing the massiveness of the ex terior.
In contrast to the side walls the facade is treated rather elaborately, and articulated with a portal flanked by two windows (Pi. 2). The idea of marking the main entrance with a mo numental portal, a characteristic of most XIII. th. c. buildings, is not much favored in the first group of mescids having only a prayer hall. This is partly
due to the small size of the buildings where the facade has no room to incor porate a large portal. Whereas, in the second group with the vestibule or the colonnaded portico, emphasis is given to a rather elaborate treatment of the facade, and various shemes have been employed to achieve this". However, only in Hacı Ferruh does there seem

B. Portal
The portal has a rectangular for mat, and a pointed and stepped arch recession which is covered by a half-dome faced with stalactites (Pi. 3). The rectangular framework measures about 4.50 m. in width, and more than 6.00 m. in height, and it does not pro ject from the surface of the wall. Two large bands, with different mouldings, run around the three sides of the rec tangle and define its borders.
The first band is a concave moul ding. It follows an irregular line and gives a stepped outline to the frame work (Pi. 3) (Fig. 2). A chevron pat tern with angular projections is carved in low relief on its inner face. Both the size and form of these projections show an assymmetrical arrangement.
Within this first one, the second band forms a perfect rectangular fra mework and its surface is decorated with a geometric ornament. The com position is an interlace, arranged with the continious intersection of narrow ribs that form ten sided star patterns at the centers and are than repeated vertically, one corresponding to each stone course. These narrow ribs are carved in low relief, thus the outlines of the design stay close to the back ground and do not create strong con trasts of light and shadow.
Between this rectangular outer framework and the pointed arch, train-gular zones appear and their surfaces group, the p o r t a l s a n d the composition of the whole f a c a d e s show v a r i a t i o n s f r o m one mes-cid to the other, depending mostly on w h e t her there is a vestibule or a portico following; the p r a y e r h a l l .
are left free of decoration. Here there is merely the semicircular arch which crowns the halfdome filled with sta lactites (PI. 4). The stalactites are shal low but large hemispherical triangles, grouped in twoes and threes and pla ced on seven rows within the halfdo me.
Behind the niche recession lies the door opening framed with a low arch. Like on the first band of the frame work, a chevron pattern is carved on its lower edge (Pi. 6).
On the lower part of the niche re cession, there are smaller niches (Mih-rabiye) on the sides, flanking the door opening. Their rectangular frameworks are defined vdth simple mouldings, yet these are badly damaged through wea
thering. The small halfdomes, crow ning their upper parts, are filled with stalactites and a stalactite cornice is placed slightly above (PI. 5).
As the above mentioned descripti ons point out, the decoration of the portal shows a simple composition where the carved zones are kept to a minimum, and the carving itself is very shallow. These characteristics are due to the early date of the structure.
The stone facings of the portal have suffered a great deal through weathering, however it is still possible to distinguish the details of the carved designs.
C. Windows
Two rectangular windows flank the portal. They are topped with poin ted relieving arches, which outline lu nette-like zones. The window openings are seperated, however, from the lu nettes by a substantial voussoired flat arch (PI. 7).
III. INTERIOR A. VesUbtde
This is a compact rectangular spa ce, serving as a passage before entering the main prayer hall. The walls are fa ced with the same grey stones as those which cover the walls of the praver hall.
As in the main prayer hall, the upper structure is altered, and th-present barrel vault is a later a addi tion" (PI. 10). On the partition wall, between the prayer hall and the vesti bule, there are the remains of trans verse arches, which do not coincide with this barrel vault, and indicate that in the original, the form of the upper structure was different.
The partition wall is pierced with a door and two windows, which to gether form the link between the pra yer hall and the vestibule. Also thes.-are the only means of lighting the pra yer hall. On the whole, the interior o I both spaces is quite dark due to the lack of windows and the dark color o T the stone facing.
/. Inner Portal
The iimer portal, leading into the prayer hall has a rectangular format, measuring about 4.50 m. in width. Just like the entrange portal, it is formed of a deep niche recession, and two small niches (Mihrabiye) at the sides (Fig. 3).

T H E MESCİD O F HACİ F E R R ' J H 183 The rectangular format is framed
by four bands that vary in their width and receede slightly inwards. The sur face of each band is decorated with a different geometric ornament carved in low relief. The first and the largest one has a geometric interlace whose composition is similar to the one on the entrance portal. This is followed by a round moulding filled with a her ringbone design; a concave moulding with a chevron pattern and a simple interlace arranged in a narrow band (Pi. 9). With its monumental propor tions and elaborate decoration, this portal seems to be more suitable as a main portal than an inner one.
2. Windows
The inner portal is flanked by two windows. The form and scale of these windows, besides the form of the ar
ches that crown them, are reminiscent to the windows on the façade wall.
B. Prayer hall
The interior of the prayer hall, can be defined as a single bay with a three layer elevation: the square mes-cid space, the zone of transition, and the dome. The transition from the square to the circular base of the dome is by fovir large squinches (Pi. 11). The se are simple squinches in which the joints radiate from the back of the squinch arch. These squinches are flan ked on the upper part by eight small blind arcades, which produce a second zone before the base of the dome fi nally starts.
The squinch on the South-East comer is treated in a slightly different manner. Here in addition to the small arcades flanking the squinch, there is a row of five small niches, whose forms closely follow the large hemi spherical forms of the ones within the mihrap niche (PI. 13).
As stated above, at present the ori ginal dome has fallen down from im
mediately above the ring moulding which formed its base. The present co vering is a flat timber roof, which con
siderably alters the original effect of the interior.
The inner walls are faced with stones from their foundations to their tops, including the hemispherical sur faces of the squinches. Here a diffe rent kind of stone is used, which is called «Gici Muhsine Taşı», and hasa grey color with a smooth patina". The small blocks of stones are carefully jointed and arranged even within the squinches. On the whole the stone workmanship is more refined and bet ter preserved than on the exterior.
It has been assumed that stone construction was carried on into the dome'-. This may be true and could be the reason why the dome collapsed, because in all the rest of the mescids in Konya, earlier or contemporary with Hacı Ferruli, the brick domes are still presented in a good condition.
Since the entrance to the prayer hall is not on the East wall, the mihrap is not opposite the door, but falls to its left.
1. Mihrap
The mihrap has a rectangular for mat which extends up to the ceiling, but does not project from the side walls. The format measures about 4.30 m. in width and over 6.00 m. in height, and the prayer niche consists of a dou ble niche recession. Thus, the propor tions are quite monumental, conside ring the small scale of the interior
(Fig. 4).
However, its scale is not distur bing, because of the selection and

handling of the material. The mihrap is faced with the same kind of greyish
stones as those which cover the inner walls, and as a result the surfaces mer
ge within one another. This besides diminishing the monumental effect, brings the mihrap into perfect har mony with the general effect of the in terior. As a result, the mihrap does not stand as a foreign element, juxtaposed with the wall, but stays in unity with the rest. There is merely a contrast of textures between the smooth surfaces of the stones covering the walls, and the decorated surfaces of those used on the mihrap.
These finely carved zones of deco ration are kept to a minimum, and used in bands which merely define and emphasize the outlines of the compo nent elements (Pi. 12).
A large band of geometric orna ment frames the rectangular format. This intricate interlace is similar to the ones used on the entrance and in ner portals. A second, narrower band, runs as a semicircular arch over the stalactites of the first pointed niche, and continues within the niche reces sion. The design in this case is a mul tiple interlace carved in low relief.
The niche recession has a rectan gular plan with a second, smaller niche placed at its back wall". The rectangu lar frame of this second one is defined by a band of carving, running around the sides and the semicircular arch. The composition is again a geometric one, where circular patterns follow one another. Each circle is linked to the one next to it by an interlace of lozenges (PI. 14).
17. T h i s seems to be the earliest example f r o m the X H r . c. where the mihrap has such a double niche recession. T h e same is repeated in a few more stone mlhraps built In later years, s u c h a s : Ni&de, Alaaddin C a m i (c. 1221), S u l t a n H a n in AJksaray (after 1229), S u l t a n H a n i n K a y s e r i - S i v a s (2. 1222-1236), and the D e v e l i U l u C a m i (c. 1280).
The stalactites of the first niche recession are arranged in five rows. These are shallow but large and have a close relationship to the shape and arrangement of those both on the en trance portal and squinches ( P I . 1 3 ) .
The stalactites of the second smal ler niche are smaller in size, and are arranged in two rows (PI. 14).
CONCLUSION
Surviving XIII. th. c. mescids are not so abundant. Only a few examples are found in Akşehir and Alanya and a larger group of them is in Konya where it is possible to distinguish two differ ent plan types. Hacı FeiTuh Mescidi be longs to the group of mescids where there is a square planned an.d domed prayer hall preceded by a closed vesti bule. And it is one of the earliest examples where this plan type has been used.'*. Furthermore, with Başarabey, Erdemşah and Karatay it shows the preliminary state of this plan where the interior is distinctly divided into a pra yer hall and a vestibule, but there is not a close unity between the two spaces On the other hand the exterior block like appearance ofthemescid does not reveal this articulation of the ijiterior.
This building can be mentioned as a unique example among the rest of the XIII. the century Konya mescid's, be cause of its material and the superior stone craftsmanship. Only in this mes-cid, both the exterior and the interior are copletely faced with dressed stones, and the entrance is emphasized by a large and ornate portal. These features bring the building closer to the larger structures of the XIII. th. century, than to the small mescids wdth which its plan is related.
