Preface

This proceedings includes the 8 papers presented at the 6th IAPR Workshop on Pattern Recognition in Remote Sensing (PRRS 2010) that was held on August 22, 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey in conjunction with the 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR 2010). The PRRS Workshop, which is organized by the Technical Committee 7 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, has established itself as an important event for scientists involved in the combined fields of pattern recognition and remote sensing. These two research fields have always overlapped, but the large

volumes of remote sensing data acquired from last generation sensors require new advanced algorithms and techniques for automatic analysis.

The goal of the PRRS Workshop is to provide an ideal setting to spread and exchange experiences by international researchers on the use of pattern recognition methods in the analysis of data collected from satellites or airborne sensors used for Earth observation. The workshop offers an opportunity for interested researchers to gain a better understanding of the many diverse research topics in remote sensing that require contributions from the pattern recognition community. The PRRS 2010 Workshop followed the tradition and format of the five earlier PRRS Workshops held in conjunction with ICPR. The 8 papers selected out of 17 submitted and reviewed with a double-blind review process covered a wide range of topics including multitemporal analysis, land cover classification, spectral unmixing, orchard detection, vehicle extraction, landmine detection, and building detection using tools such as conditional random fields, kernel discriminative random fields, neural networks, self-organizing maps, 3D

segmentation, hidden Markov models, Adaboost, and perceptual grouping on various types of data obtained from optical, synthetic aperture radar, hyperspectral, and LIDAR sensors.

There were also two very interesting invited talks titled "Earth Understanding from Observation: A Contextual Approach" by Prof. Roger L. King from the Mississippi State University and "Quantifying Spectral Predictor Value in High Resolution WorldView-2 Imagery" by Dr. Giovanni Marchisio from DigitalGlobe Inc.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the PRRS 2010 Program Committee for their support in reviewing the submitted papers. We also thank all the authors, the invited speakers, the sponsors IAPR and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, and the local organizers for ICPR 2010 for helping to make this event a success.
