JANE EYRE as a bildungsroman
The novel is about the heroine’s transformation from childhood to maturity. ın the process of this transformation she has a lot of experiences, learns things and questions herself. We witness her transition into different stages of her life. We watch her develop.
So the novel is at the beginning narrated from a child’s point of view. Since as a bildungsroman it is narrated retrospectively, since, therefore, Jane is an adult as she tells us her story, there is a double perspective: Jane as a child & Jane as a grown-up.
The figure of the innocent, lonely and neglected child is common in Victorian Literature. The education and growth from childhood show the process of adjustment within a hostile structure.
