Course Description and Objectives

What are the foundations of Western science? This lecture/course examines the theories,

experiments, and calculations of medieval European scientists before the Scientific Revolution

of the seventeenth century. As well as considering the work of the major contributors to

astronomy, natural philosophy, and medicine in this period, this course will trace their ideas

and the work of the schools of Rome, and medieval Europe within their social, religious,

cultural, and intellectual contexts.
