LETTER OF INVITATION (Symposium Announcement)
“International Symposium on The Cyprus Issue and Its Future with International Aspects” will be organized in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on 11-13 December, 2014 with the collaboration of Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry - Higher Institution of Ataturk Culture, Language and History – Ataturk Research Center and Eastern Mediterranean University-Atatürk Research Center. The papers will be presented either in Turkish or English.
As is known, the history of the Cyprus issue dates back to over a hundred years ago.
The Cyprus issue that gained international nature in mid-1950s has been moved to a different dimension by deploying the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces (UNFICYP) into the island in 1964. Therefore, while the existence of British troops previously created a distinct division on the island, UNFICYP has maintained the division for the past half century. On the other hand, no efforts did positive result until today to eliminate this division on the island although forty years passed after Cyprus Peace Operation by Republic of Turkey in 1974.
Kofi Annan presented a plan, known as “Annan Plan” on the issue during his mission as the UN Secretary General, which aimed at uniting the two nations and the structure which was about to be divided under a federal state on the island. The plan has been rewritten five times as a result of the challenging negotiations throughout long periods. The final version was put to the vote for the referendum on both parts of the island simultaneously in 2004 and the plan which envisaged the said bi-communal federal state was refused by 75% by the Greek Cypriots while the Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of the plan by 64%. What transpired in the aftermath of the referendum caused disputes on international political platforms and the world public opinion particularly the owner of the plan perceived that the negotiations on Cyprus came to an end and the case looked unsolvable. Ten years after this namely at the beginning of 2014, the negotiations restarted between Derviş Eroğlu, the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Nicos Anastasiades, the President of Cyprus under the auspices of the United Nations.
On the other hand, that the disputes which the Cyprus issue created within the island gained international dimensions led to transformations in the foreign policies of Turkey and Greece as well and it affected particularly the relations between Turkey and the EU from time to time.
The Cyprus issue is intended to be examined with the international dimensions covering the political, social and economic aspects as well in the above-mentioned framework in the symposium which is going to be held in this context.
The International Symposium which will bring together academicians and researchers working on Cyprus partaking in the organization is expected to contribute to the production of scientific information as well as to shed light on the Cyprus issue.
Abstracts should be composed to reveal the topic of the research, its scope, the references used and its contribution to science.
