ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
INTRODUCTION
• Humankind needs to KNOW:
• Who?
• What?
• How?
• When
• Where?
• Why?
ARCH 501 ARAŞTIRMA YÖNTEMLERİ
GİRİŞ
• İnsan aşağıdaki soruların yanıtlarını BİLMEK ihtiyacındadır:
• Kim?
• Ne?
• Nasıl?
• Ne zaman?
• Nerede?
• Neden,niçin?
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• "IT IS NOT THE ANSWER THAT
ENLIGHTENS BUT
THE QUESTION."

ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Author James Snyder provides a commonly accepted definition of research: It is
“systematic inquiry directed toward the creation of knowledge.”
• Two elements of this definition are significant:
• 1- The inquiry is systematic :
• a)How particular information is culled from our infinitely broad experiences? b) How it is
categorized, analyzed? C) How it is presented?
• 1- (inquiry) sistematiktir.
• a)Özel bir bilgi, sonsuz genişlikte olan
deneyimlerimizin arasından NASIL sıyrılıp alınır? b) O özel bilgi NASIL kategorize ve analiz edilir? c) O özel bilgi NASIL sunulur?
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• For research to be research, it necessarily involves reducing lived experience or observed phenomena to chunks of information that are noted and
categorized in some way.
2- The notion of knowledge creation is frequently cited as characteristic of the research
endeavor...Not only something on the scale of grand theories of various sciences, .akin to Einstein’s
theory of relativity but new knowledge can also emerge through the relatively small increments of knowledge attained through a variety of means.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Remarkably enough, the brief definition of
research brought by the author James Synder
remains entirely consistent with characterizations of research in contemporary architectural
discourse and academic parlance more generally.
• ‘Araştırma’ nın,yazar James Synder tarafından
ortaya konan yukarıdaki tanımının, akademik çevre ve çağdaş mimarlık söylemlerindeki araştırma
özellikleriyle tamamen uyumlu olması kayda değerdir.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Another definition that the University of
Michigan provides on its online educational web site reflects the two main components:
“Systematic investigation” that “contributes to generalizable knowledge.”
• The terms systematic and generalizable
knowledge are used to imply to: “ Research
conducted in multiple systems of inquiry.
ARCH 501 ARAŞTIRMA YÖNTEMLERİ
• Michigan üniversitesinin çevrimiçi (online) eğitim web sitesinde verdiği tanım ise iki ana
bileşeni yansıtır: Araştırma,“Genellenebilir/kural haline getirilebilir bilgiye katkıda bulunan
Sistematik araştırma/soruşturma”dır.
• Sistematik ve Genellenebilir bilgi terimleri:
• “ Çoklu araştırma/soruşturma sistemleri
uygulanarak yapılmış araştırma” anlamında
kullanılmaktadır.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Inquiry:
• The act of inquiring; a close examination of a matter in a search for information or truth
• Sorgu /Soruşturma /Araştırma:
Sorgulama, soruşturma, araştırma eylemi; bir şey (olgu, madde, konu) hakkında bilgi/ gerçeği arama yolunda o şeyin yakından incelenmesi
• *systems of inquiry.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Abraham Kaplan (*)defines methods as the
study of the process of inquiry , rather than its product. The terms “methods” or
“methodology” can be used to denote
research processes which are common across the entire range of architectural research,
areas from the technical to the humanities, and from the most applied to the most
theoretical.

Terminology
• *School of thought: Way of thinking (associated
with a group, nation or region) - ”Eastern thought“.)
• *Paradigm/ Paradigma:
• a)A system of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality,
• Gerçeği görme yolunu oluşturan varsayımlar, kavramlar, değerler ve uygulamalar sistemi
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS Terminology
• *Paradigm/ Paradigma:
• b)General viewpoint in science which indicates how and which phenomena are to be
described and investigated
• Bilimdeki, hangi olguların,nasıl tanımlanması
ve incelenmesi gerektiğini işaret eden genel
bakış açısı
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS Terminology
• * Strategy:
• a) The skillful management and planning of anything,
• Birşeyin,mahirce planlanması ve yönetilmesi,
• b) A plan of action intended to accomplish a specific goal,
• Belirli bir hedefe ulaşmaya yönelik eylem planı
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS Terminology
• *Tactic:
• a) An organizational concept, (within STRATEGY- plan of action)
• Örgütsel kavram,(STRATEJİ içerisinde)
• b) Any skillful move, (within STRATEGY- plan of action)
• Mahirce yapılmış bir hareket ,(STRATEJİ içerisinde)
• *Method:
• A process by which a task is completed; a way of doing something
• Bir görevin tamamlandığı süreç, birşeyi yapma yolu,biçimi
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• The methodological practices of strategies and
tactics are framed by broader systems of inquiry and schools of thought. In Fig.1 the outermost
framework represents the system of inquiry
(sometimes labeled a paradigm or worldview), which entails broad assumptions about the nature of
reality, knowledge, and being.
• For example, the belief system called postpositivism assumes that there is an objective reality that can be experienced and measured.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• The next frame in Fig.1 represents what we call a “School of thought”, a broad theoretical
• perspective that has significantly influenced multiple disciplines. The adoption of a
particular school of thought is likely to
influence how research questions are framed,
and often imply the use of specific modes of
analysis.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• In Fig.1,in the context of research, a strategy refers to the overall research plan or structure of the research study. In contrast, the tactics refer to a more detailed deployment of
specific techniques, such as data collection
devices, response formats, archival treatment,
analytical procedures, and so on.
ARCH 501 ARAŞTIRMA YÖNTEMLERİ
• Şekil 1 de,araştırma bağlamında, strateji,
araştırma çalışmasının tüm/genel planı veya strüktürü/yapısını kasteder.
• Buna karşın, taktikler, özel tekniklerin detaylı bir biçimde konuşlandırılması/nerede
kullanılacağının belirlenmesi ile ilgilidir. Örn.:
Veri toplama araçları,yanıt formatları, analitik
işlemler...

• Assignment 1:
• Due: Lecture on 02.12.2015
• Format: Research paper submission
• Subjects:
• A. Is architecture a science or a discipline? Why?
• What type of science or discipline it is?
• B. What are PARADIGMS used in ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH?
•
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• SCIENCE
• Science is a process of inquiry that brings together elements of both rationalism and empiricism. It employs rational logic and checks each premise, and each logical step with empirical observation.
• Science is the inter-play of logic with observation
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• BASIC TENETS OF SCIENCE
• A scientist believes that:
1. A true, physical and external universe exists.
2.While there may be randomness and thus
unpredictability in the universe, it is primarily an
orderly system.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• 3.The principles of this orderly universe can be discovered
• 4.Our knowledge of the universe is always
incomplete. New knowledge can, should, and
does alter current ideas.
ARCH 501 RESEARCH METHODS
• Tenacity: It has always been so
• Intuition: I feel it is so
• Authority: They say it is so
• Rationalism: It makes sense for it to be so
• Empiricism: Data suggests it to be so
• Science: It can be demonstrated to be so
RESEARCH
• Research is also a process of inquiry. It entails the following steps:
1. Posing a question
2. Developing a procedure to answer that question 3. Following that procedure.
However,
• Not all research is scientific
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
• Scientific research is the process of inquiry in which we:
1. Pose a question about the physical world
2. Develop a set of procedures using the rational process that if followed, would convincingly answer that question
3. Plan to make appropriate empirical observations
4. Rationally interpret the empirical observation to arrive at a conclusion.
SCIENTIFIC THEORY
• The outcome of fundamental science is Scientific Theory.
• Scientific Theory is a model of reality.
• A model IS NOT reality but only REPRESENTS it.
Therefore
