The Hepatoprotective Effects of Taiwan Folk Medicine " Eclipta prostrata" and " Ixeris chinensis " on Various Experimental Liver Injuri
Eclipta prostrata(
Linn.)和蒲公英 Ixeris chinensis(Thunb.)Nak. Acetaminophen( PcmL, i.e. paracetamol
(Bupleurum chinense DC.)
Abstract : Hepatoprotective effects of Ixeris chinensis(
Thunb.)Nak. and Eclipta prostrata( Linn. )were studied on acute hepatitis induced in mice by a single dose of
carbon tetrachloride ( 31.25μl/kg ,ip )or acetaminophen ( 600 mg/kg i.p. )and in rats by a single dose of β-D-
galactosamine ( 188mg/kg, ip ). Hepatoprotective activity was monitored by estimating the serum transaminases( SGOT and SGPT ) levels and histopathological changes in the
liver of experimental animals. The Ixeris chinensis( Thunb. ) Nak. extracts significantly inhibited the acute elevation of
serum transaminases caused by the three kinds of hepatotoxins. Histopathologically, the crude I.
chinensis extracts significantly ameliorated the three hepatotoxins-induced histopathological changes in the livers of experimental animals. The Eclipta prostrata extracts significantly inhibited the acute elevation
of serum transaminases induced by carbon tetrachloride in mice and byβ-D-GalN in rats. However, in the
experimental model of acetaminophen, Although an inhibiting tendency was noticed in the E. prostrata treated group, but no significance could be observed. Histopathologically, the crude E. prostrata extracts significantly ameliorated
either carbon tetrachloride or GalN- induced histopathological changes in the livers of experimental animals but no
significant improvement could be observed in
acetaminophen induced liver damage. All serological and histopathological effects of Eclipta prostrata and Ixeris chinensis were compared with those of Bupleurum chinense DC., which has been reported previously as a treatment criteria of hepatitis.
