By NECDET SAKAOĞLUF etih ten (1 4 5 3 ) sonra Anadolu'dan İstanbul'a göçen Tü rk a ile le ri, Bi zanslIlardan kalma kârgir, kapalı, so ğuk evlere ısınama dılar. 1509 büyük depremi ise gözleri ni korkuttu. H afif malzemeden, rutu betsiz, bol ışıklı, kı şın kolay ısıtılan "ahşebî" evler yap maya başladılar. Bu büyük payitahtın özel koşulları, kent düzeni, barındırdığı etnik ve sosyal top luluklar, ahşap ya pılanmayı çok yön lü etkiledi. Paşa ko naklarından, yalılar dan ulemâ saadetha- nelerine, sur dışına doğru kenar mahal le evlerin e kadar, türlü konut formları ortaya çıktı. Evler, asırlara, sahiplerine, semtlere, kullanım amaçlarına göre gi derek çeşitlendi. Dış cepheler, birbiriyle yarışırcasına güzel leşti. İk i üç katlı, otuz kırk odalı, se- lamlıklı haremli ko nakların yanında bir iki odalı bağıllar, altı ahır üstü konut kır evleri için de ortak
payda, ahşap malzemenin egemenliğiydi.
Kenar mahalle evlerini şehir evlerinden ayıran özellik ise üretici aile gereksinimine uygunluktu. Bu resimde görülen, üst katı "eliböğründeler"le sokağa taşmış ev, bu tipin en eski örneklerinden dir. Pencerelerinde cam yerine sürme kafesler dikkati çekiyor. Koltuk penceresinin üstündeki kalem işi "Maşallahü kâne" yazısının altında okunan "sene 1217", günümüze ulaşmayan bu
evin 1802'de yapıldığını göstermektedir. •

afraid o f being trapped under the rubble. They b egan to c o n s tru c t ligh t, tim b e r houses, w hich d id n o t su ffer fro m damp, were easily heated in winter, and were well lit by plenty o f windows.

One and two- ro o m cotta ges w ith byres o n the g r o u n d f l o o r stood n e x t to grand houses belonging to paças with thirty o r forty rooms and two or m ore flo o rs . B u t they were a ll m ade o f the same material: wood.
One main feature distinguishing the houses o f middle class fro m poorer neighbourhoods was the fa c t that the latter met the needs o f the productive family. The house seen in this postcard, with its upper flo o r jettied over the street on long struts, is an early example o f such homes. Note the lattices gu a rd in g the windows fro m pry in g eyes.
