Of Journeys

Workshop tutors: Zeynep Ataş, Tomris Akın, Ali Paşaoğlu

“Of Journeys” is a workshop that aims to overlap the circulation of matter, the building of Fontego dei Turchi which has become a stopover in that circulation, and the personal journeys of the participants. To this end it tackles its theme in three layers: The first layer refers to the circulation of humans and objects on the Venetian and Ottoman trade routes and in the Mediterranean basin, especially textile raw materials and fabrics; the second layer, the personal accumulation and travels of the students and coordinators who will be brought to the International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia; and the third layer refers to this experience itself, that is, the personal experiences of the viewers who visit and follow the Pavilion of Turkey and the Fontego dei Turchi building.

Fontego dei Turchi, where the workshop products are planned to be exhibited, is a building that the Ottoman merchants used as home, market and warehouse from the early 17th century until the beginning of the 19th century. Fleece, wool, yarn, felt and various fabrics have been selected as the main materials of the work. The reason for this selection of material is the fact that fleece, mohair and various woollen and silk fabrics brought from various Anatolian towns constituted the main volume of commerce between Venice and the Ottoman state as compared to products like leather, spice, etc. The notion that the use of these materials as a marginal tool of architectural thinking will inspire the creative speculations of the workshop participants is another dimension of the workshop that we find interesting.

The workshop participants are expected to produce an installation which will deliver their own nomadic experiences through the concept of individual “journey” and the subtheme of “new nomadism”; one-to-one scale installations in which they can perhaps place their own bodies or create various individual topographies. It is intended for the individual productions that interact with one another to turn into a collectively produced whole. The installation that will be designed by the workshop participants through their own experiences will unite with the experiences of biennale visitors and building users throughout its stay in the building and trigger new interactions, journeys and new memory productions born from the intersection of these travels.
