Bunun başlıca sebebi Müslü man bir kadının peçesini çıkarıp sahnede yer
al-The kanto - a word derived from the Ita lian canto - was originally a music hall song, a genre which in Turkey gradually acquired its own u n iq u e character. These lively songs quickly became popu lar in 19th century Istanbul. A cco rd ing to m u sic ia n a n d researcher R u hi A y a n g il in Istanbul Encyclopaedia, the kanto can be divided into those o f the early period from the 1850s up to 1923, when it was sung largely in the the atres of Galata and Direklerarasi, and those o f the later period from 1923 to 1945. In the beginning kantos were sung at performances o f the traditional tuluat (improvised) theatre, as interludes intended to both entertain and hold the atten tion o f the audience. Light-hearted and fu ll o f erotic innuendo, these songs had easily remembered lyrics and tunes. When combined with the flirtatious gestures and expressions o f the singer, the kanto was
irresistible to people o f virtually all walks o f life. For m a n y years kan to was perfo rm ed only by Armenian and Greek singers, fo r the principal rea son that no Muslim woman could in Ottoman times unveil her face and perform on stage, an idea which conflicted with both religious precepts and accepted

Kan to yapan kadınların tümü tiyatro asıllıydı.

morality. But in time Muslim women got around this problem by chang ing their names, and eventually it
became possible fo r them to per form kanto without hiding their
identity. Zarife was one o f the best kn o w n o f these M uslim kanto singers.
All the kanto singers came from a theatrical background, an d they did not allow outsiders into the closed circle or marry out o f it themselves. So they experienced love, sorrow and happiness entirely within their own world o f theatre, where marriages between men a n d women o f different religious faiths were accepted at a time when this was unheard o f in society at large.
Kanto was neither quite western nor eastern in character. The songs were erotic fo r their
time, but also characterised by witty and satirical comment on society. They were classified into several types according to the subject o f their lyrics; those which were about love being blown as sevda kanto, hülya kanto or muhabbet kanto, those about gipsies as todi
The most fam ous o f the earlier kanto singers who continued to perform after the esta b lish m en t o f the Turkish Republic in 1923 were Kamelya, Peruz, Little Peruz, N em zur, Şamran, Mermaid Eftalya, Zarife, Amelya, Big Virgin, Little Virgin, Giselle, Uranya, A va niya, Mademoiselle Flora, Violet a nd R ozika. There were also male kanto singers, the best know n being Todori, Aşod and Şevki. In the later period m any kanto songs were recorded, and the most striking aspect o f these was the new approach revealed in the lyrics towards social conditions, daily life, and above all relations between men and women, which h a d ch a ng ed radically in the accelerated process o f westernisa tion. In 1945 the age o f kanto drew to an end, but kanto itself never died out completely. Today, when kanto has more or less disappeared, the loss o f this music which set its mark on an age can be attributed both to the fact that as a popu lar music it was vulnerable to the whims o f fash ion, and also to changes in social life.
