lthough, at the present day. underglass painting constitutes a largely forgotten branch of popular Turkish art, of which very few examples are now to be seen, at one time these paintings would be frequently encountered in coffee houses, private houses ard shops, as well as in religious environments such as mosques, dervish lodges and tombs. Varous functions were performed by these paintings, which were produced first and foremost by folk artists and expressed emotions and beliefs in line with communal culture and traditions. The subjects o f these underglass paintings and inscriptions w ere generally o f a religious character, and the' peculiar brilliance and vividness disp'ayed by the colours of the glass lent them a particularly attractive appearance. T h e ir cheapness made them very easily affordable and they were very commonly used in intenor decoration. Moreover, the members of the household would regard them as providing effective protection against the evil eye, as well as calamities and vanous illnesses.Let us dwell for a moment on the nature and technique o f underglass painting. This involved a cold painting technique requiring no very complicated preparation in which powdered dyes, gouache or oil paint was applied to the back o f a glass panel. The glass served as protection agamst external factors while at the same time it endowed the colours with a certain attractive brilliance. The method employed was in complete contrast to the techniques used on canvas or paper. W hile in more ordinary forms of painting the details, signature and date constitute the final stage of the process, in the underglass technique the design of the painting, the details and the signature come first. The spaces between the lines are coloured in later and the background left to the end. The most remarkable feature of Turkish underglass painting is
the flat application of the colour and the lack of any light and shade in the depiction o f the figures. A sheet o f paper, cardboard o r wood is placed behind the painted surface to protect it from outside influences. This protective paper sometimes performs the function of a background, with the artists leaving some parts o f the composition transparent and giving the painting a certain metallic bnlliance by placing a gold- or silver-gilt paper behind them. As a matter of fact, the use o f materials such as mirrors or fabric as a background can be reckoned as one of the distinguishing features o f Turkish underg'ass painting.
The difficulty posed by this technique arises from the fact that the motif painted on the glass is presented in mirror, fashion, with the left-hand elements appearing on the right. Moreover, as the layers o f colour overlap, any retouching or amendment in the colours is quite out of the question.
The fact that these paintings are neither signed nor dated by the artists gives rise to difficulties in carrying out research on the subject, but it is sometimes possible to obtain a rough idea of the date on the basis of the pictorial elements. The oldest examples the dates o f which are definitely known belong to the beginning o f the 19th century. The fragility o f the material of which they are made has led to a great amount of loss from breakage.
In order to learn how this art originated and developed among the Turks it is necessary to have recourse to old documents in libraries and museums. W e are deeply indebted to the many-sided artist, the late Malik Aksel, for the very important research and scholarly works he produced on the subject of popular art and painting. The first o f these was the article entitled "Underglass painting" published in the 6th number of "Turkiyemiz" (February 1972). He also
T Ü R K l Y E M i Z
dwelt briefly on underglass paintings in his books "Anadolu Halk Resimleri" (Anatolian Folk Painting) (I9 6 0 ) and "Türklerde Dinî Resimler" (Religious Painting among the Turks) (1967). Specimens of underglass painting from Malik Aksel's private collection were included in the exhibition of popular paintings held in the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture in 1979. Unfortunately, no catalogue o f the exhibition was published.
The interest of Western researchers in underglass painting, not only in Europe but also in various countries in America. Africa and Asia, long preceded any display of interest in Turkey and still continues at the present day. Books and articles are being published on this branch of art. sales and exhibitions have been arranged and artists themselves are continuing to work in this field.
My own interest in the subject dates
back to 1979 and the exhibition of specimens of underglass paintings from the Udo Damm ert collection in the Goethe Institute-German Cultural Centre in Paris. My interest was awakened both by the exhibits themselves and the fact that it was the first exhibition of this kind that I had seen, and this exhibition played an important role in my choice o f "Underglass painting in Turkey" as the subject o f a thesis presented at the Sorbonne University in 1980. My realization that artefacts displaying this technique had been produced throughout the centuries in a number of different countries suggested to me that paintings of this type might be equally widespread in my own country. In p-eparing my thesis I made great use of the publications of western writers and of the books written by Malik Aksel.
W estern researchers make it quite clear in their writings that the pro I deration in Europe of underglass paint ng, the origins of which can be traced back to very early times, was due above all to the Turks. Oriental and Jewish craftsmen are known to have been painting on glass before the advent of Christianity. Glass medallions with primitive religious paintings and symbols on their backs have been found hidden by the Civ- sc ans in underground tombs dating mom the ancient Roman period. After the fall of Rome, this technique was ce.eloped by Byzantine glass craftsmen in Constantinople, which was then an important centre of glass production. Later, when the city fell into me hands of the Ottomans, these craftsmen fled to lta!y, and to Venice in particular, thus ensuring the reb rth and proliferation in Europe of a technique that had fallen into oblivion in the course of time.
According to H.W.Keiser. me oldest painting to have survived ■'■cm this penod is the painting of the Crucifixion in the Schwerin Museum in Germany (1320-1330). The painting o- the altar o f the Church of Sainte-C-oix in Rostock in North-East Germa-y dates from the beginning of the 14m century.
The earliest use o f m e term "unde-glass painting" to refer to a technique quite independe-t o f oil painting is to be found in the municipal
T Ü R K İ Y E M İ Z
archives o f the German city o f Augsburg for the year 1684. The art of underglass painting was very widespread in Europe throughout the
17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
In his book on underglass painting in Tunisia (1972), the Tunisian researcher Muhammed Masmoudi also traces the origins o f underglass painting to the Turks, pointing out that underglass artists w ere inspired by Turkish popular art as well as by the work of famous calligraphers such as Hamdullah o f Amasya, Karahisari and Hafiz Osman. The influence exerted by the Turks on the Tunisians can be observed in the political field in the depiction o f Mustafa Kemal. In some paintings, Mustafa Kemal is shown accompanied by Ismet Inonu and his wife Latife Hanim. From Tunis this

influence spread to Senegal in particular. So much so that I have seen Tunisian and Senegalese specimens closely resembling a Turkish underglass painting depicting the combat between the Prophet Ali and Ebu Talib.
Turkish underglass painting displays a wide range o f subject matter varging in accordance with different regions and popular beliefs. The topics may be classified as follows:
1 Inscriptions (Besmele, and the names o f Allah and the Prophets, Kelime-i Tevhit - declaration o f God's Unity, verses from the Qur'an and notable sayings).
2
Calligraphic paintings (mosques, ewers, fruits, the Seal o f Solomon, birds, the Seven Sleepers, the Amentü boat, Mevlevi headdress, symbols o f the Bektaşî, Alevî, Nakşibendî and Şabaniye religious sects, the Prophet Ali's sword Zülflkar, Ah rninel aşk).3
Landscapes (Scenes of Mecca and Medina, mosques, the Hejaz railway, landscapes with "Ah rninel aşk", famous boats).4
Popular tales and legends, compositions with figures (the wars of the Prophet Ali, the Prophet Ali and his camel, Burak - the winged horse o f the Prophet Muhammed, wrestling matches between folk heroes and a homed giant, the sacrifice of the son of the Prophet Ibrahim, Şahmeran, officialceremonies with the Sultans, compositions including human figures, animals and symbols.
5 Ottoman coats of arms.
As Malik Aksel points out in his book on Anatolian popular painting, the artists showed a preference for paintings o f important events in which the community felt a certain pride. One of these is the construction o f the Hejaz railroad, one o f the most important and most controversial projects o f the reign o f Sultan Abdiilhamid. The most outstanding feature o f the railroad, whose construction began on I September 1900 on the occasion o f the 25th anniversary of the Sultan's accession to the throne, was that it was carried out wholly with the help and assistance of the Islamic world. The religious aspect of the topic played an important role in the artists' approach. Although the apparent reason for its construction was to connect Damascus to the holy cities and so to make them more accessible to pilgrims, it was actually exploited by Sultan Abdülhamid for political purposes and religious propaganda. The railroad offered easy transport to Turkish troops sent by the Ottoman State to suppress mutinies in the Arabian peninsula.
One of the most frequent topics to be seen in these popular paintings was the Prophet Ali and his camel. In these pictures, Ali, who was held in particularly high esteem by the Alevîs and Bektaşıs, is depicted as a worker of miracles. Ali is depicted at one and the same time as the body in the coffin and as the camel-driver. The one represents the material body, the other the spiritual. Ali's sons, Hasan and Hüseyin, are to be seen in most of these pictures.
A t the present day, urban intellectuals and collectors as well as Anatolian peasants rarely fail to adorn their walls with "Şahmeran" pictures, in line with the customs and traditions o f the people o f the eastern and south eastern parts o f the country. These Şahmeran pictures, which are believed to ensure prosperity and give protection against illness, were usually given as wedding presents or as part of the trousseau and hung up in the
T Ü R K İ V E M İ Z
oedroom. In these pictures, which are as striking symbolically as visually, the $ahmeran is depicted as half human naif serpent, with a crown on its head.
In the old days, the coffee-houses of stanbul w ere named in accordance ■ th the type of clientele. There were
-;:k" coffee-houses frequented by . dering minstrels, "esn af’ coffee-■ ruses w here shopkeepers and spadesmen gathered, shore coffee 's - s e s . "acem" (Persian) tea-houses, semaT" coffee-houses frequented by : 'gel's, "gazinos" (cafés chantants) and ’V -m arke t coffee-houses. Most of the " c "Acem " coffee-houses w ere . s 'e c by Shiite Turks from . e-oa- an and were generally ■: z - e 'te d by "külhanbeys" and -raca. s" (rowdies and bully boys), ' t a a s of these coffee-houses and i-"o „se s w ere hung with pictures " s ~ -."e §ahname depicting Zaloglu " ~e~ cefeating the monster Sefit, - - " a t s fight with the monster with
the seven heads, Dem ir Pehlivan’s combat with the lion, Hamza Pehlivan overturning the Kaf mountain, Isfendyar and the dragon and other pictures depicting heroes in combat.
Underglass painting developed in parallel with the glass industry and the consequent distribution and fall in price of the materials. Although very widespread, the art of underglass painting was finally badly hit by 20th century industry, and the increase in the price o f glass and the quick and cheap printing of pictures on paper by modem techniques reduced interest in a technique that now provided the craftsman with much less return, finally ope'.ng the way to the complete disappearance of the craft itself.
In the old days, underglass paintings were sold in the Sahaflar Çarşısı (second-hand book market) and in the shops m the vicinity of the mosques. The surviving craftsmen have closed their shops and, as they have also
abandoned their work, old specimens, now mostly in a very dilapidated state, are only to be found in antique shops, in the flea markets and in a *'ew shops selling old goods. O u r museums are far from rich as regards their cc' ections of underglass paintings and contain very few specimens. A t the present day, most of the surviving underglass inscriptions and paintings owe their preseivation to a few coHectors and artists who appreciate their value and have saved them from comp!e*.e oblivion.
It is essential, before rt is too late, that steps should be taken to re. talize this popular art form by offering encouragement to the attests who have closed their shops. b> exhibiting examples of their works in ~useums. by attempting to further enrch private collections, by d'ecting the attention of researchers to this subject, by arranging exhibitions ar d by endeavouring to introduce examples of this art form to a wider public.
