Byzantine Palate o f the Prime

yolu Edirnekapı’ya düşenlerin gezmeyi ih
mal edemeyecekleri tarihî mekânlar vardır. Kariye, Kefe
li, Fethiye, Odalar. Ivazefendi, Tokludede, Odalar cami
leri; Çukurbostan (Aspar Sarnıcı) ve Anemas Hapishane
si yürüme mesafesi içindedir. İlkin, Mimar Sinan’ın Ka
nunî Süleyman’ın biricik kızı için ‘Yedinci Tepe’de anıt
laştırdığı Mihrimah Camii (1555) görülmelidir. Buradan,
Edirne Kapısı-Eğri Kapı yönünde Ayvansaray’a inilirken
bu iki kapı; Heraklius, Komnenos, Paleolog surları;
Mahkeme ve Aya Nikola kuleleri görülebilir.
İlgi çeken tarihî bir mekân da Bizans imparatorlarına ait
Blahernai Sarayı’nın ayakta kalan merasim köşkü Tekfur
Sarayı’dır. Bizans kaynaklarında ‘Porfirogennetos (Prens)
Evi’ olarak geçen binaya, Türkler ‘Tekfur Sarayı’ adını
vermişlerdir. Üç katlı, eni boyu 24 x 11 metre olan yapı
nın, 10. yüzyıla dayanan uzun bir mazisi vardır. Tuğla
dan ve taş mozaiklerle örülü üç duvarı sağlamken, sütun
ve kemerlere dayalı kuzey cephesi yıkılmıştır. Bir za
manlar mermer süveli pencereleri, cumba biçimli şapeli,
sur üstündeki balkonuyla göz kamaştıran Tekfur Sara-
yı’nın, İstanbul’un Türkler tarafından alındığı 1453’te,
birçok Bizans yapısı gibi kısmen harap olduğunu eski
resimler göstermektedir.
Osmanlılar zamanında dönem dönem içinde çini, cam,
şişe atölyelerinin, ipek tezgâhlarının faaliyet gösterdiği
Tekfur Sarayı, bir yıldırım çarpması sonucu harap olmuş;
1955'te başlatılan restorasyon çalışmaları da yarım kal
mıştır.
T h e district o f Istanbul known as Edimekapı has some o f the most fascinating historic buildings in the city. H ere you can see the Church o f Chora with its magnificent mosaics, the m osques o f Kefeli, Fethiye, O dalar, Ivazefendi and Tokludede, the form er Byzantine reservoir known as the Aspar Cistern (Çukurbostan in Turkish), and the Dungeon o f Anemas. Mihrimah Mosque founded in 1555 by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent for his only daughter and built by the celebrated architect Sinan is the place to begin. W alking downhill from here you can see the ancient city gates o f Edim e and Eğri, the Heracleian, Com nenos and Palaeologian walls, and the tow ers o f Mahkeme and Saint Nicolas.
O n e o f th e m ost interesting buildings is th e Byzantine House o f Porphyrogennetos (Prince), which was the cere monial building o f the Blachem ae Palace, known as Tekfur Saray by the Turks. Three o f the brick and stone walls o f this three-storey building are still standing, while the north w all supported by colum ns and arches has collapsed. Measuring 24 x I I metres, it dates from the 10th century. W ith its marble w indow casings, chapel in the form o f a bay and balcony o ver the city wall, this imposing palace was already partly in ruins at the tim e o f the Turkish con quest in 1453, as contem porary pictures reveal. During Ottom an times it was variously used fo r the manufacture o f tiles, glassware and silk fabric. The building was badly damaged by lightning, and restoration w ork commenced in 1955 but was not completed.
