ABSTRACT

The benefits provided by the ecosystems to human beings are defined as ecosystem services. Ecosystem services regularly take place in the provision of clean drinking water and the purification of wastes. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) classifies ecosystem services as production such as food and water; regulation such as climate and disease control; supportive such as nutrient cycles and crop pollination; and cultural services such as spiritual and recreational benefits. The processes responsible for the supply of ecosystem services and factors such as land use patterns, fragmentation of land or intensification of agricultural production significantly vary in time and space. Therefore, ecosystem maps are needed to define and evaluate the production of ecosystem services as a function of ecosystem processes, land use types, climate and environmental change. The provision of ecosystem services is a complex process and can take place where different ecosystem services are interrelated. Synergies and changes are common among different ecosystem services and between ecosystem services and biodiversity. In some cases, the production of a particular ecosystem service may cause another service to decrease, or an increase in the production of one service may cause another service to increase. This complex system can only be understood by mapping ecosystem services and knowing their spatial distribution.
