rese, tabhane, darüzziyafe, bimarhane, darüşşifa, ha mam, mektep, türbeler ve sultan çarşısı, Sinan’ın Külli- yesi’ni oluşturmaktadır. Evliya Çelebi, Kanunî’nin bu eşsiz eserini, Belgrad, Malta ve Rodos ganimetleri ile yaptırttığını; kiilliyeye “ebcet” (elifba) okuyan çocuklar için okul, İstanbul’a gelen yolcular ve iş sahipleri için kervansaray ve ziyafet evi, hastalar için sağlık yurdu, esnaf için kavaf, düğmeci ve kuyumcu çarşıları ile, eşi Hürrem Sultan'la kendisine birer türbe eklettiğini belir tir.
4 Ekim 1557’de ibadete açılan cami, Osmanlı kültürü nün simgelerinden sayıldığı gibi, ktilliyenin mimarî vur gulaması da camide yoğunlaşmıştır. Caminin kubbe yüksekliği 53 metre, kubbe çapı 27 metre, minare boy ları 74 metredir. Minarelerin toplam 10 şerefesi, Kanu nî’nin onuncu padişah olduğunu simgeler.
Sinan’ın anılarını içeren Tezkiretü’l Bünyan adlı kitapta, caminin kubbesini taşıyan 9,20 metre boyundaki dört porfir sütunun, İskenderiye, Baalbek ve İstanbul’daki Bizans harabelerinden getirildiği; bunların, bel kalınlı ğında halatlar, çelik makaralar, kadırga direkleri, güçlü ırgatlar, “çarh-ı felek gibi” dolaplar ile ve “Allah Allah!” nidalarıyla dikildiği yazılıdır. Evliya Çelebi ise porfir sütunları Mısır’dan gemilere yükleyip İstanbul’a getiren Karınca Kaptan’ın, padişah tarafından ödüllendirilişini
anlatır. •
This monumental building fo u n d e d by S u lta n Süleyman the Magnificent is the largest o f the works by the g rea t O ttom an a rch itect M im a r S inan, who died in 1588. Around this royal mosque is a complex o f six medreses, an alms house, public kitchen, mental hospital, hamam (Turkish bath), school, tombs and shops whose rents provided rev enue fo r the expense o f upkeep. The 17th century writer Evliya Çelebi wrote that this m agnificent complex was fin a n c e d by spoils o f w ar fro m Belgrade, M alta a n d Rhodes. Travellers and merchants who came to Istanbul could stay in the kervansaray a n d eat in the pu b lic kitchen. The shops were leased to shoemakers, button mak ers a n d jewellers. In the two richly decorated tombs lie Sultan Süleym an, his children, a n d his wife Hürrem Sultan.
The mosque opened to worship on 4 October 1557. Its dome stands 53 metres in height and has a diameter o f 27 metres. The minarets are 74 metres high, and have ten bal conies in all to symbolise the fa c t that Süleyman was the tenth Ottoman sultan.
In his memoirs, the Tezkiretül B ünyan, M im ar Sinan recorded that the fo u r porphyry columns 9.2 metres in heig h t were brought here fr o m B y z a n tin e ru in s in Alexandria, Baalbek a n d Istanbul. They were erected using ropes as thick, as a m an’s waist, steel pulleys, galley masts, a n d winches like wheels o f fa te by the strongest labourers, who shouted Allah, Allah as they heaved. He also notes that the captain who transported these great columns was rewarded generously by the sultan. •
