Osmanlı Sultanları 1830’lu

yıllara kadar kalabalık ha­

rem v e en d eru n k a d ro la rıyla iç içe yaşadılar.

Saltanatın, cülûs, bayramlaşma, Hırka-i Saadet ziya­

reti gibi en önemli törenleri de burada düzenleni­

yordu.

İki kulesiyle bir şato görünümü veren sarayın ikinci

kapısına resmi belgelerde Bâbüsselâm, halk dilinde

ise Ortakapı deniliyordu. Bâbüssaade Ağası ya da

Kapu Ağası ünvanını taşıyan bir şef ve çok sayıda

ak ağa, buranın bekçiliğini yapmaktaydılar. Bu ka­

pıdan içeriye Padişah’tan başka kimse atla giremez­

di. Dışarıda Padişah’ın mutlak vekili sıfatıyla sınırsız

yetkilere sahip olan Sadrazam, buradan girince yet­

kilerini kullanamazdı. İki kule ve aradaki senk-en-

daz, savunma ve gözcülük içindi.

Kapuarası den ilen tutukevi vardı. Sarayda iken

Kapuarası’na alınan vezirler ve yüksek kamu görev­

lileri ya cellada teslim edilirler veya sürgüne gönde­

rilirlerdi.

H e re the O ttom a n sultans lived with an enormous household o f palace officials a n d servants. It was at Topkapi that ceremonies to mark accessions, religious festivals a nd the a n u u a l visit by the sultan to the Holy Relics

were held.

The second gate o f the palace flanked by two tall towers was known officially as Babiisselam a n d popularly as Ortakapi (the M iddle Gate). The porta l was guarded by a division o f guards under the com m and o f the Babiissade Agasi (Master o f the Gate o f Felicity). N o one but the sultan could pass through this gate on horseback. The Grand Vezir, who as the sultan’s representative enjoyed unlim ited powers beyond the walls o f the palace, was deprived o f a ll authority once he entered this gate. The two towers and machiolations between them were f o r defense purposes. The Babiissade Agasi had his quarters in the towers, which also contained dormitories f o r the guards and a prison known as Kapuarasi. Vezirs and high ranking p u b lic officials who bad com m itted an offense o r otherwise fa llen out o f fa v o u r were imprisoned here before being deliv­

ered into the hands o f the executioner o r exiled.

Palace was turned into a museum.
