Rüyalarında hile deniz gören kü çük çocuk, anne ve babasının tüm karşı çıkışlarına rağmen istediğini elde eder. 1914 yılın d a Bursa Sultanisi’ni bitir dikten sonra İs tanbul’daki Bah riye G ed ik li Mektebi’nin imti hanını kazanır. 1916 yılında “T a h t e l b a h i r " (denizaltı) kurs
larına katılmak üzere bir grup arkadaşıyla Al manya’ya gönderilir. Berlin’den Kiel’e giderek denizaltı eğitimine başlar, fakat Almanya’nın sa vaşta mağlubiyeti kabul etmesiyle tekrar Berlin’e dönmek zorunda kalır. Memlekete gitmek için beklerken Zati Sungur hastalanır, arkadaşları İs tanbul’a döner. Hastaneden çıktıktan sonra iş bulam ayan Sungur, c e b in d e k i son parayla Köln’e gider ve orada Humboldt Bakır Fabrika- sı’nda iş bulur. Daha ilk günden Alman ustabaşı, onun bu işten anlamadığını fark eder. Mesai biti minde birlikte bira içmeye giderler, bir süre son ra ustabaşının bir arkadaşı da onlara katılır. İki adam tam bir deste iskambil kâğıdıyla oyuna başlayacakken, Zati Sungur iskambil kâğıtlarına uzanır.
Ünlü illüzyonist bakın kaderini değiştiren bu olayı nasıl anlatıyor: “‘U stam ’, dedim , ‘bir dakika müsaade eder misin?’ Oyunlarını böl düğüm için bilmem ba na kızd ılar mı? Ben yüzlerine bile bakmıyo rum. Henüz iskam bil kâğıdının keram etine, o mucize gibi kuvveti ne inanm ış da d eğil dim. ‘B eğ e n şuradan bir kâğıt,’ diye devam ettim. Usta hırsla elini uzattı, bir kâğıt çekti. ‘Siz de,’ diyerek misafi re de uzattım. O da ay nı şeyi yaptı. ‘Alın şu desteyi, elinizdeki kâ ğıtları bana

In 1916 he was sent with a g ro u p o f y o u n g NCOs to Germany to attend subm arine courses in Kiel, but with Germ any’s defeat in the First World War, they travelled to Berlin in preparation fo r returning to Turkey. In Berlin Zati Sungur fell ill a nd was adm itted to hospital. His frien d s returned to Istanbul but he was obliged to remain behind. After being discharged from hospital Sungur tried to fin d work, and when this proved impossible in Berlin be spent bis last money on the fa r e to Cologne, where he got a job in the Humboldt Copper Works. The German fo rem a n realised immediately that the young man knew nothing about the job at all. After work they went to have a beer together, and a little ivhile later a friend of the foreman joined them. The two men got out a pack of cards and they just about to begin a game,

den arasına koyun ve dilediğiniz gibi karıştı rın... Sonra verin bana...’ Görseniz nasıl karıştırdı lar. İnadına ben de bir hayli karıştırdım ve bir lahza sonra, onların be ğendikleri kâğıtları ce ketimin iç cebinden çı kardım.”
Zati Sungur, geç saatlere kadar ustabaşına bir sü rü yeni numara göstere rek hayranlığını kazanır. Usta, böyle marifetleri olan birinin, bakırcı us talığını da rahatlıkla be cerebileceğine karar ve rir ve Zati Sungur sevi len, iyi bir işçi olarak 80 Mark yevm iyeyle yedi ay o fabrikada çalışır. Bir gün arkadaşlarının ısrarlarına dayanamaya rak illüzyonistlerin top landığı bir kulübe gider.
Yaptığı numaralarla oradakilerin de beğenisini kazanır. Çevresindeki herkes artık sahneye çık ması, bu işten para kazanması için onu teşvik et meye başlar. Until late that night Zati Sungur continued to do tricks fo r the aston ished forem an, who decided that som eone so skilled at card tricks would have no trouble learn ing the skills needed in the copper works. For the next seven months Zati Sungu r worked at the fa c tory fo r a daily wage o f 8 0 deutschemarks. He did his work well and was liked by his fellow workers.

“Arjantin’de temsil veriyor dum. T iyatro her akşam hıncahınç dolu. Bir hafta programda değişiklik yap tım. Yanımda çalışan bir kı- £ zı testere ile ikiye bölecek tim. Kızı kestim. Fie spent the next E two years im proving his . knowledge o f foreign lan guages and performing in Italy, Spain and Portugal, gradually becoming a well known celebrity. He then moved on to America, where he performed in many major cities.
One o f the interesting experiences which Zati Sungur recalls took place in Argentinia: ‘The the atre was packed every night. One week I intro duced a new trick, into the programme: sawing the girl who w orked with me in half. When I had finished cutting h er head was on one side and her feet on the other. Everyone was wait ing in suspense, just then the so u n d o f a g u n was heard a n d bullets rained onto the stage. When the g u n m a n was ca u gh t he explained that he had fall en in love with the girl, and seeing her cut in half was so angry that he decided to kill me. ’

6 Temmuz 1984’te seksen altı yaşında hayata' gözlerini yuman efsanevi illüzyonist Zati Sungur, “Benim işim, sizin bakışlarınızı çelmek, aldat maktır. Ve siz bunu bilerek, bunu isteyerek beni seyre gelmiyor musunuz? Nihayet bir uzun rüya dan ibaret olan hayatın bütün aldanışları, keşke böyle tatlı ve eğlenceli olsaydı,” diyor son olarak

1936, twenty years later, he returned as a famous illusionist. Coincidences had swept him away from the narrow confines o f his home town and a conventional life into one full o f adventure. Back in Turkey he perform ed in Istanbul a nd other cities around the country, and in 1936 married his stage assistant Necla Hamm. He went on tours abroad, perform ing in Lebanon, Egypt, Austria and Italy.
Zati S u n g u r m ade all his own props a n d in the 1960s fo u n d ed the Universal Studio of Con ju rin g a n d Illusionist Tricks. He wrote several books about conjuring tricks fo r people to en tertain their friends at home. On 18 July 1981 he was declared Master of Magic at a ceremony in Czechoslovakia. On 6 July 1984 Zati Sungur died at the age of 86. As the legendary illusionist explained shortly before his death: My job is to divert your attention a nd so deceive. And do not you, knowing this, come to watch me, desiring to be deceived? If only all the deceptions o f life, which after all is hut a long dream, were as agreeable and amusing as
this. ’ .
