DEATH OF DEAN BURNS
Miss Eleanor I. Burns, former dean of the American College for Girls in Istanbul, died February 1, at New York Hospital.
Miss Burns first went to the Girls College as a teacher in 1908. She be came dean in 1924, American vice presi dent in 1932, and served in both capaci ties until her retirement as Dean Emer itus in 1950. She had been living in New York since her retirement.
Miss Burns was born in Philadelphia and educated at Cornell University. She was an instructor in physics at Wellesley College from 1905 until 1908.
She saw Turkey’s change from a mon archy to a republic, and she saw the Girls College, which she served with steadfast devotion and loyalty, meet the challenge of changing times, so that to day its alumnae are taking an active and responsible part in the educational, poli tical, and cultural life of Turkey.
