EVALUATION OF TURKEY'S SYRIAN POLICY AS A CONSTRUCTIVIST APPROACH

ABSTRACT

As a result of the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, ethnic, religious and cultural conflicts arose and unexpected changes took place internationally. Materialist and individual-based International Relations Theories have been inadequate and questioned. As a result, Constructivism, which is regarded as one of the critical theories and adopted as an approach, has shown a rapid development. The most distinctive feature that separates constructivism from other theories and approaches is the proposal of a different ontology to understand and explain international relations. Constructivism, which introduces a different perspective in the analysis of international relations, allows socio-cultural factors such as identity, culture, discourse and language, which are ignored by the basic theories of discipline, to be included in the analysis of international relations.

In this contex, the foreign policy based on identity, culture and discourse of Turkey has been dealt with in a constructivist approach in the Middle East and Syria. The study first mentions the epistemological and ontological foundations of the Constructivist approach. Later, the historical background of Turkey-Syrian relations was included. Finally, in the period of AKP government, Turkey's Syrian Policy constructivism was analyzed with an approach, and

conclusions were found in the light of findings obtained. Descriptive analysis method was used in the paper.
