Checklist of Cynipidae of Turkey with a new genus record

Yusuf Katılmıs¸* and Suat Kıyak

Department of Biology, Gazi Universty, Teknikokullar, Ankara, Turkey (Received 25 October 2007; final version received 17 April 2008)

The present study lists all Cynipidae reported for the Turkish fauna. We recognise 81 gall-inducing wasps (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). Dryocosmus cerriphilus Giraud, 1859 is recorded from Turkey for the first time.

Keywords: checklist; Cynipidae; Dryocosmus cerriphilus; new record; Turkey

Introduction

The Cynipidae is one of the largest families of the Cynipoidea. About 1400 species are known worldwide (Ronquist 1999). The number of valid species recorded from Europe and contiguous territories including North Africa and Turkey is less than 300 (Dalla-Torre and Kieffer 1910; Ionescu 1957; Stone et al. 2001; Nieves-Aldrey 2001). A recent study Stone et al. (forthcoming) listed 133 oak cynipids from the Western Palaearctic. Historically, the fauna of Cynipidae from the Eastern Mediterranean, Near East and Turkey has been poorly studied. Despite their high species richness in Turkey, there are very few records of Cynipidae from this country in the reference work by Dalla-Torre and Kieffer (1910). Other studies were mostly caried out on oak galls and forest pests in Turkey (Bodenheimer 1941; Acatay 1943; Schimitschek 1944; Alkan 1952; C¸ anakc¸ıog˘lu 1956; Karaca 1956; Bas¸ 1973; Erdem 1975; Kıyak et al. 2008). In these studies, Boedenheimer (1941) recorded 21 species belong to five genera, Acatay (1943) 24 species belong to five genera, Schimitschek (1944) 22 species belong to five genera, Alkan (1952) 32 species belong to six genera, C¸ anakc¸ıog˘lu (1956) three species belong to one genera, Karaca (1956) 21 species belong to five genera, Bas¸ (1973) 34 species belong to five genera, Erdem (1975) 34 species belong to five genera and Kıyak et al. (2008) 30 species belong to seven genera. Melika and Stone (2001) identified a new species from Turkey and Iran (Andricus askewi) and Melika et al. (2004) identified a new species from Turkey, Iran and Greece (Andricus megalucidus).

Material and methods

Until now, no complete list of Cynipidae of Turkey has been published. The available data from the literature have been used to compile this review paper, as well as a paper in press (Stone et al., forthcoming). In addition, we determined that Dryocosmus cerriphilus is a new record at both genus and species level for the fauna of Turkey.

New records, Dryocosmus cerriphilus galls, were preserved in 70% alcohol and emerged adults were dried and pinned. The specimens are currently preserved in the Zoology Museum of Gazi University.

Discussion

Stone et al. reported 65 oak cynipids in Turkey (forthcoming). We herewith add nine species from the available literature from local studies on oaks in Turkey (Bodenheimer 1941; Acatay 1943; Schimitschek 1944; Alkan 1952; Bas¸ 1973; Erdem 1975; Kıyak et al. 2008). These species are: Andricus amenti (Acatay 1943), Andricus aries (Bas¸ 1973; Erdem 1975; Kıyak et al. 2008), Andricus conificus (Bas¸ 1973; Erdem 1975), Andricus glutinosus (Bodenheimer 1941; Acatay 1943; Alkan 1952), Andricus hungaricus (Bodenheimer 1941), Andricus solitarius (Bas¸ 1973; Erdem 1975), Callirhytis glandium (Bodenheimer 1941), Cynips agama (Bodenheimer 1941; Schimitschek 1944; Alkan 1952), Synergus pallicornis (Bodenheimer 1941). A little known species Aylax hypecoi, was recorded on Hypecoum sp. (Alkan 1952). Five species of Diplolepis and one Liposthenes species were found in Turkey (Dalla-Torre and Kieffer 1910; Karaca 1956; Ionescu 1957; Pujade-Villar 1993; O¨ zbek et al. 1996; O¨zbek et al. 1998; Nieves-Aldrey 2001). In this study, we listed 81 species belonging to 16 genera, with one new record from Turkey. This is only the first step and we hope that the number of species of Turkey cynipid fauna will increase following local faunistic studies in the future.
