Topkapı Palace — Tiles in the Golden Way.
As soon as I enter the quiet beauty of Topkapi Palace, so completely cut off from the noise and bustle of the city, I am filled with a feeling of calm pleasure and peace ful satisfaction. It is like a cool drink in the middle of a scorching desert. The decorated doors, the wide courtyards, the rose and tulip gardens, the centu ries old plane trees, the dark cypresses ranged one behind the other, the do mes, arches and chimneys, together with the thought of the patient, resigned,
honourable men who
spent all their lives in ser vice here carry me off into the depths of history. The crystal-clear water flowing from the quiet fountains, with the birds dipping their beaks and their bo dies into the pools... These are things I never get tired of watching. As I pass from private rooms to audience chambers, from
audience chambers to
courtyards, I imagine the
aghas, pashas, viziers and commanders with their high jewelled turbans and bright - coloured robes. From here armies set out on military campaigns, imperial rescripts were read, heads rolled, hono urs were distributed, and Sultans were deposed. As a professional photog rapher, my work has ta ken me to all the sights of Istanbul, to its museums, pavilions, old streets and palaces, but the greater part of my time has been spent in Topkapi Palace. I have endeavoured to re cord its beauty from every angle, from inside and
outside, and even from a plane. There is splendour and magnificence in every corner, signifance in every aspect; every visit reveals new wonders.
Topkapi Palace consists of a ‘complex’ that develo ped gradually with the new additions made in every reign. It is compo sed of gardens, pavilions,
arches, chambers and
apartments opening one into the other, some of them highly ornate, some quite simple, all built and decorated in accordance with the tastes of the individual sultans, some of whom spent all their lives on horseback in mili tary campaigns, while ot hers never set foot outside their palace.
A great deal has been written about Topkapi Pa lace, and a great deal more will be written in the future. To record it all in photographs is a much more difficult underta king. I have done my best to capture the dazzling riches of the Treasury, the beauty of the chambers in which the Holy Relics are preserved, the rather chill but at the same time legendary magic of the Harem, once filled with gossip and intrigue, the Gate of Felicity, the scene of so many solemn cere monies, together with all these buildings adorned with the finest examples of Turkish decorative art. Bu it is impossible for me to describe these things in words. Let me show them to you through the lense of my camera.
