The Mihrimah Sultan nligious
I
stanbul could almost be said to be Mimar Sinan's
city with over 100 o f his buildings still gracing the
skyline. The great Ottoman architect Sinan had
the fortune to ivork as an architect when the empire
was at its pinnacle o f power and wealth. Most tourists
visit his masterpiece, the Süleymaniye Mosque. Howev
er, in order to understand why Islanbulites continue to
revere the 16th century genius who shaped their city, a
newcomer must make a few short detours to encounter
some o f the other mosques built by the Ottoman master.
The M ihrim ah Sultan M osque
The road off-the-beaten-path begins at the Edim e
Kapı, the city gate through which Mehmet the Conquer
or rode triumphantly to take Constantinople from the
Byzantines in 1453. Just inside the walls stands one o f
Sinan's most dramatic structures, the Mosque o f Prin
cess Mihrimah Sultan.
Like her father, Sultan
Süleyman, Princess Mihrimah had a passion for build
ing; as the wife o f Rüstem Paşa, one o f the 16th centu
ry's most powerful viziers, she also had the wealth to sup
port her architectural endeavors.
The Edime Kapı mosque complex is situated on the
highest point o f the old city. Taking fu ll advantage o f
the prominent locale, Sinan further elevated the mosque
by raising it on a vault-supported platform. A single
minaret soars high above the city's walls and still serves
as a beacon fo r weary travellers entering Istanbul from
Thracian lands.
You enter the mosque's courtyard from Fevzi Paşa
Caddesi and pass through
a small gate and up a flight
o f stairs. Student cells o f
the medrese, or the theology
school, surround all three
sides o f the courtyard. A
few other subsidiary build
ings - a bath, soup kitchen,
shops whose income helped
to endow the mosque, and
tombs — were originally
part o f the religious com
plex. Most have suffered
over the years from the com

MİMAR SİNAN'IN
GİZLİ ŞAHESERLERİ
K

T he Sokollu M eh met Paşa M osque
On the opposite side o f the old city, a short walk from
the Sultan Ahmet Mosque lies another o f Sinan's
formidable architectural works: the Sokollu Mehmet
Paşa Mosque. Sokollu Mehmet served as Ottoman
vizier for 33 years to three different 16th century sultans
- Suleyman the Magnificent, Selim II and Murat III.
He is remembered fo r his attempt to dig a canal
connecting the Don and the. Volga rivers, a move which
would have given the Ottomans supremacy over the
Black Sea as well as the Caspian Sea and Central Asian
trade routes. Although the Don-Volga canal project was
never completed, the vizier had both the enthusiasm and
the foresight to begin planning another canal - this time
at Suez.
To reach the Sokollu Mehmet Paşa Mosque, you take
Şehit Mehmet Paşa Street from the Hippodrome; this
winds its way down a steep incline, to the entrance o f the
mosque complex. Faced with the challenge o f building a
mosque, on a sloping and awkwardly proportioned site,
Sinan created a split level compound by elevating the
medrese and courtyard on a platform.
To enter the complex, you take the dark marble
staircase that tunnels under the medrese's classroom
and deposits you in the light and spacious courtyard one
level above the street.
Sinan played with dark
and light and the confined
and the open spaces o f this
entryway, manipulating
the site's shortcoming to
create a unique Baroque
like composition.

According to
A ptullah Kuran, an
expert on Sinan's architecture, the stained glass panels
above the mihrab or prayer niche are rare and
contemporary examples o f 16th century Ottoman
glasswork.
I f you look closely above the mihrab and the central
door, you can see small black stones imbedded in brass
medallions. These are fragments from the Kaaba stone
in Mecca which were given to Sokollu Mehmet in
acknowledgment fo r his financial support o f extensive
restorations at the holiest Muslim sanctuary.
The Sokollu Mehmet Paşa Mosque is always bustling
with young students who attend Koran courses in the
old medrese, and tourists visiting this site are still rare
enough to elicit excitement and curious reactions from
the children. The complex's environs retain much o f
their old Ottoman character, and a number o f wooden
houses have been restored and converted into cosy,
inexpensive pensions.
Whether you decide to stay near the Sokollu, or just
visit fo r an hour or two, your efforts to get off the beaten
track to see some o f Mimar Sinan's other masterpieces
will be well-rewarded. A few short detours will show you
that some o f the greatest architectural treasures o f this
city are hidden in its smaller and less explored pockets.

Murat'a vezirlik etti.
Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Camisi'ne giden yol At Meydanı'ndan başlıyor.
Sokullu Camisi, günün her saatinde eski medre sede Kuran kursuna gelen öğrencilerle dolu.
