Mevlevihane’nin Kuruluşu
İstanbul, Türkler tarafından alındıktan sonra, Fatih Sultan Mehmet’in emriyle ilk mevlevilik kültürü, Veznecilerdeki “ Kalen-
derhane Camii” nde başlatılmıştır. Ancak,
Mevlevihane binası olarak İstanbul’da ilk in şa edilen bina, “ Kulekapısı Mevlevihane- s i” dir.
Fatih’in İstanbul'u fethinden yarım yüzyıl sonra bile, şimdiki Mevlevihane’nin bulun duğu yerden, Taksim'e kadar yemyeşil or manlar bulunurmuş.

I I I Mevlevihane in Galata, İstanbul, is today the home of the Museum of Divan Literature, as well as several times a year serving its old function as the place of worship of the Mevlevi or
Whirling Dervishes, whose extraordinary ceremonies and unique music entrapture modern audiences just as they have since the 13th century.
The semahane, or hall where the
semâ, whirling dance, is performed,
dates from the 18th century, its intricate woodwork being in the classical Ottoman style. Nowhere else has a semahane of this type survived to the present day.
As well as the semahane, the
Mevlevihane consists of a sebil (fountain for distributing drinking water), and other types of drinking and ornamental fountains, tombs of eminent Mevlevi elders, and a library. It was the first

a Meviev7 dervish lodge in İstanbul. After
the conquest of the city by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, the Kalenderhane Mosque had been
allocated to the Mevlevi dervishes, and it was only a century later, in 1553, that land in the forested area on the hills above Galata on the opposite side of the Golden Horn was appropriated for their use. Today the heart of the densely built- up part of the city between the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, four centuries ago, the city of Galata founded by the Genoans occupied only the foreshore, while behind was virgin forest,
frequented by royal hunting parties. Once part of the extensive estates of İskender Pasha, the land on which the Galata Mevlevihane stands today was given to the Mevlevi, dervishes during a visit to İstanbul of Sultan-ı Divanî Semai Dede, a descendant of Mevtana, founder of the Mevlevi sect.
For centuries the seventy-seven Mevlevihanes throught the extensive Ottoman Empire were foremost seats of learning and culture, producing
enlightened philosophers, writers, musicians, poets and calligraphers.
Situated close by the unmistakable landmark of the Galata Tower with its conical roof, the Mevlevihane is easy to locate, and in July visitors have the additional opportunity of attending the performances of the traditional Mevlevi ceremonies, at which the white-robed dervishes, in their voluminous skirted robes, whirl in a trance of communion with God.

Mevlevi beliefs are based on the mystic philosophies of Celâleddin Rumi, known as Mevlâna, who preached the unity of God and the universe. God is apperent in the universe he created, and to exist is to be a facet of God, who is the only true being, and the source of everything, to which everything is destined finally to return.
Within man’s body is a holy essence known as the soul, which throughout its life on earth yearns to be restored to the being of God from whence it came.
Understanding of God comes not from rational deduction and reasoning, but from inner perception and love of Him. Only love of God can give man the maturity and understanding of divine mysteries which he seeks, and all beings revolve with this love, and comprehend God according to their own hâl or state.
The Galata Kuledibi Mevlevihane embodies a mystic culture, which still retains its relevansce in the modern world.
