Abstract:
Objective: The objective of this study was to determinae the prevalence of fibrocystic breast change in its cystic form, among different age groups of women and cystic disease and correlate with the presence of MSP1 polymorphism of CYP1A1 cytochrome P450. Methods: A retrospective, case-control study carried out between March 2005 and March 2007. Two hundred and four women underwent ultrasound examination, divided into two groups: 44 with cystic breast disease (cases) and 149 without breast disease (controls), 11 women were excluded. Genetic study was performed for the detection of CYP1A1 by polymerase chain reaction and used the Fisher's test 2 for statistical analysis.χand Results: The cystic breast disease diagnosed by ultrasound was present in 22% of the population studied. The cysts were of simple type in 93%, multiple in 75% of cases, and measured 4-10 mm in 46%. The left breast in the upper-lateral quadrant was the most frequent. The clinical-epidemiological profile of these women was: white, aged 41-50 years, regular menstrual cycles, pregnancies and complaining of mastalgia. In the genetic analysis of CYP1A1, we observed homozygous wild at a frequency of 68.2% in the cases and 66% in control; 31.28% heterozygotes in the study group and 26.8% in controle. There was no appearance of homozygous mutated cases in group emerging as 7.2% in control. There was no statistically significant difference between groups (p = 0.42). Conclusion: The prevalence and almost all the epidemiological profile of cystic breast disease were consistent with the literature. There was a higher frequency of heterozygous mutated in the case group, but not homozigotes. There was no statistically significant association between the polymorphism of CYP1A1 and fibrocystic
