A New Year, A New Time

1

After 16 years, the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology has imple-mented some internal changes. There was a need to reorganize after our acquisition by the Turkish Society of Cardiology. With the digitization of communication, the transfer of information between cities and even countries became possible with just a click. Con-sequently, the fact that the office was located in Eskişehir was not an obstacle for most correspondence and operations.

Following the acquisition, the new chairperson of the edito-rial board, Professor Doctor Lale Tokgözoğlu, announced the new joint administration of the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology to the cardiology community. In my role as the editor-in-chief of the jour-nal, I explained how I thought we might best collaborate to cre-ate a more successful Anatolian Journal of Cardiology. The most important issues I highlighted were the independence of the ed-itor-in-chief, the necessity to strengthen the office with regard to employees and equipment, and preparing a future editor-in-chief who can take on the entire responsibility of the journal and the office, if necessary.

Initially, my dear friend, Professor Doctor Zeki Öngen, was of-fered this position by the chairperson of the Turkish Society of Car-diology, since I was unable to present candidates from Eskişehir. For nearly three years, Professor Öngen assisted with production of the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology and monitored the func-tioning and developments of the journal, despite living in Istanbul. At the end of that time, however, he notified us that he wished to withdraw as a candidate to be editor-in-chief, due to the intensity of the work. Now, Professor Doctor Adnan Abacı is the editor of the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology.

The Eskişehir office operations will now be reduced and the majority of the work will be performed in a new central office for the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology to be established in Yeşilköy, İstanbul, where the office of the Turkish Society of Cardiology is located. Two office positions in Eskişehir will be eliminated. The journal will be produced with one part-time secretary in Eskişehir supporting the Istanbul office. I will be in the Istanbul office one or two days a month during this period.

In a time of faster, easier, and even cheaper communication,

as well as publication in an electronic environment, the prices of printing and shipping have increased. Therefore, we have adopted new publication policies. Ten years ago, the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology printed 2000 copies of each issue. Since then, revenue from advertising has decreased and there is free access to pub-lications in a digital format. Therefore, we will no longer produce that volume of printed copies. As of 2018, the number of printed copies will be reduced. Subscribers will continue to receive jour-nals for the period of their subscription.

At the most recent meeting of associate editors of the Ana-tolian Journal of Cardiology, the condition requiring a journal subscription in order to submit case reports and original images that I have discussed previously was lifted. The volume of submis-sions will increase, as will the workload of the journal staff, though these articles have a low probability of citation.

The boundaries of editorial independence are determined by the editor-in-chief and the owner of each journal based on joint decisions and the conventions of various international editorial boards and medical journal organizations. For more than a de-cade the members of the editorial board of the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology, the associate editors, and I worked very hard. It is now time to transfer these duties to other friends. With their great self-sacrifice and bounless knowledge, the contribution of these collegues to the Anatolian Journal of Cardiology is an “impact fac-tor” that never gets smaller, but only increases with time. We can never repay them for their efforts. The new associate editors were selected by Editor-in-Chief among the candidates proposed by the Turkish Society of Cardiology and the other associate editors, considering the needs of the journal. I am sure that my new col-leagues will carry the load with the same display of self-sacrifice as their predecessors.

My wish is for the new year and this new time to bring us noth-ing but good.
