Week 6 - Respiratory system of fish

 The main respiratory organs of fishes are gills- hence called as

branchial respiration.

 The gills are located either side of the pharynx in the branchial

chamber.

 The gills are open to exterior in elasmobranches, hence known as open

type of branchial system.

 Each gill consists of arch, lamellae and rackers. Gaseous exchange

takes place in gill lamellae.

 Water enters into the body through the mouth except in few

elasmobranches.

 The water enters into branchial chamber through buccal cavity and

pharynx and goes out though external branchial openings after bathing the gill lamellae.
