SUMMARY
KIRALP S, An In Vitro Evaluation of Frictional Forces Between Various Bracket and Arch Wire Combinations with Two Different Elastomeric Ligature Materials, University of Dicle, Institute of Health Sciences, Phd Thesis in Orthodontics Diyarbakır, 2005.
The aim of this study is to comparative frictional evaluation of different bracket and arc wire types with two different elastomeric ligation materials, which were last mentioned in orthodontic literatures and to suggest a course of action to physician. In our study titanium (Rematitan, Dentaurum), porcelain (Transcend S 6000, 3M Unitek), stainless steel (Discovery, Dentaurum) and stainless steel which can give low friction opportunity (Synergy Rmo) brackets with stainless steel (SS, G&H Wire Company), superelastic NITI (SENITI G&H Wire Company), ion implanted superelastic NITI (Ionguard Bioforce Sentalloy, Gac) TMA (TitanMoly, G&H Wire Company) and ion implanted TMA (Low Friction TMA Ormco) arch wires and conventional elastomeric ligature (Ligature Stick, Rmo) and low friction elastomeric ligature (Super Slick Ties with Metasafix Technology, TpOrtho) were tested. All experiments were done with Zwick 1445 Universal testing machine.
The results of the study showed that, bracket types, arch wire materials, arch wire dimensions and ligation types are main characteristics on friction. Titanium brackets were found that good alternatives for stainless steel brackets which were displayed similar friction values. In our study the lowest frictional values established with Synergy brackets that called low friction brackets. Also an aesthetically superiority, porcelain brackets displayed the highest friction resistances. In all arch wire groups, TMA showed the highest and IGNS showed the lowest frictional values. Ion implantation provided lower frictional resistances on superelastic NITI and TMA arch wires when compared with unimplanted ones. Except titanium bracket – superelastic NITI group, in all groups increase of arch wire dimension results with higher frictional resistances. There was not a significant difference found between conventional elastomeric ligatures and low friction elastomeric ligatures.
Physician has to know reciprocal physical characteristics of brackets, arch wires and ligature materials while working with sliding mechanics.
Key Words: Frictional forces, sliding mechanics.
