Ayaşlı Şâban Şifâî (1645-1704)

Şâban Şifâî (1645-c.1701)

The first Turkish treatise on obstetrics was written in 1699, and is entitled Tedbirü’l-Mevlûd , translated as The Book of Medical Measures for pregnant women. It is a pity it has yet to be published and still remains only in manuscript form.

Of the author Şâban Şifâî’, pronounced Shábán Shefäee, little is known, except that he was a practicing physician, and professor at Süleymaniye Medical School, in İstanbul.

Although a contemporary of Sydenham, it is not apparent that he was influenced by his great European

contemporaries in writing his treatis. Well-versed in the medical practices of the ancients and the Islamic school, Şâban Şifâi follows their precpets.

Şâban Şifâî’s treatise was aimed at the general public, and especially mothers. Accordingly, the author considers the topic from the perspective of the lay reader, and the treatise is arranged chronologically, beginning with a discussion on prenatal care and ending with a chapter on the education of children. All in all, it contains much that is traditional and of good sense, and makes felicitous comments on the

guidance of the developing child.
