A 68-year-old man with a prosthetic aortic valve replacement A95 A76
no: 21) presented with exertional dyspnea and leg edema. Two-dimen- sional transthoracic echo- cardiography revealed a high-velocity systolic jet across a defect between the left ventricle /9) and the right atrium (RA).
0anifest /9 to RA shunt was demonstrated in the transesophageal echocardiographic examination, con- sistent with the Gerbode type ventricular septal defect (96'). The diagnosis was con¿rmed during surgery and repaired. In this case, we report a rare form of the defect of /9 to RA communication, attributed to an A9R. /9 to RA communication, Nnown as Gerbode defect, may exist in congenital or acquired forms. The acquired forms develop mainly due to infective endo- carditis, myocardial infarction and valvular surgery.
2ur case is a presentation of a rare Gerbode type 96' which occurred as a result of an A9R.
