Tüberküloz ve Toraks Dergisi, 1953 y›l›nda yay›n hayat›na bafllam›fl olup Türk Tüberküloz ve Toraks Derne¤i’nin süreli yay›n› olarak Mart, Haziran, Eylül ve Aral›k aylar›nda olmak üzere y›lda 4 say› yay›mlanmaktad›r. Tüber- küloz ve Toraks Dergisi’nde yay›mlanacak yaz›lar›n seçiminde hakem de-
¤erlendirme sistemi kullan›lmaktad›r. Derginin yay›n dili Türkçe ve ‹ngiliz- ce’dir. Araflt›rma yaz›lar› özellikle desteklenmektedir.
Derginin amac›; öncelikle toraks hastal›klar› konusunda yap›lan deneysel çal›flmalar, klinik çal›flmalar, derlemeler, olgu sunumlar›, k›sa rapor ve edi- töre mektup türünden yaz›lar ile okuyucular aras› bilgi al›flveriflini sa¤lamak ve bilimsel geliflime katk›da bulunmakt›r. Yay›mlad›¤› yaz›lar›n uluslararas›
temsiline ve at›f›na çal›flarak ülkemizin bilimsel geliflimine katk›da bulun- mak derginin yay›mlanma amaçlar› aras›ndad›r.

Tuberculosis and Thorax is a periodical journal of Turkish Association of Tuberculosis and Thorax and has been published quarterly in March, June, September and December since 1953. A peer-reviewed system is used to select manuscripts. The languages of the journal are Turkish and English.
Original research articles are particularly supported and encouraged.
The goal of the Journal is to present collective scientific knowledge and the scientific background via experimental and clinical studies, reviews, ca- se reports, short communications and letters to the editor. To undertake a novel effort in the international representation and attribution of publis- hed articles are the other aims of the journal.
The target readers of the Tuberculosis and Thorax include chest diseases specialists and residents as well as all other physicians working in the field of chest diseases.

1. Tüberküloz ve Toraks Dergisi, Türk Tüberküloz ve Toraks Derne¤i’nin süreli ya- y›n› olarak üç ayda bir olmak üzere Mart, Haziran, Eylül ve Aral›k aylar›nda ya- y›mlanmaktad›r.
2. Derginin amac›; öncelikle toraks hastal›klar› konusunda yap›lan deneysel çal›fl- malar, klinik çal›flmalar, derlemeler, olgu sunumlar›, k›sa raporlar ve editöre mektup türünden yaz›lar ile okuyucular aras› bilgi al›flveriflini sa¤lamak ve bi- limsel geliflime katk›da bulunmakt›r.
3. Derginin yay›n dili Türkçe ve ‹ngilizce’dir. Türkçe yaz›larda Türk Dil Kurumunun Türkçe Sözlü¤ü ve Yaz›m K›lavuzu temel al›nmal›d›r (http://tdk.org.tr). Anato- mik terimlerin Latinceleri kullan›lmal›d›r. Gündelik t›p diline yerleflmifl terimler ise okunduklar› gibi Türkçe yaz›m kurallar›na uygun olarak yaz›lmal›d›r. ‹ngiliz- ce veya baflka bir yabanc› dildeki flekli ile yaz›lan terimler t›rnak içinde belirtil- melidir.
4. Yaz›da mikroorganizmalar›n latince isimleri ilk geçtikleri yerde tam ve aç›k ola- rak yaz›lmal›, daha sonraki kullan›mlarda cins isminin ilk harfi büyük harfle ya- z›larak, nokta konulmal› ve tür ismi küçük harflerle yaz›larak k›salt›lm›fl olarak kullan›lmal›d›r. Örne¤in: Streptococcus pneumoniae ... S. pneumoniae gibi. Mikroorganizmalar›n orijinal latince isimleri italik olarak yaz›lmal›d›r. Ya- z›da mikroorganizmalar›n sadece cins ad› belirtiliyorsa Türkçe’ye kazand›r›lm›fl flekli ile yaz›labilir. Örne¤in; stafilokok, streptokok gibi. Bu durumda italik ya- z›l›ma gerek yoktur. Antibiyotik isimleri dil bütünlü¤ünü sa¤lamak aç›s›ndan okundu¤u gibi yaz›lmal› ve cümle bafl›nda de¤ilse ilk harfi küçük olmal›d›r. Ör- ne¤in; sefotaksim, streptomisin, penisilin gibi.
5. Yay›mlanmas› amac›yla gönderilen yaz›lar Uluslararas› T›p Dergi Editörleri Ko- mitesi (ICMJE) taraf›ndan oluflturulan ve güncellenen, Biyomedikal Dergilere Gönderilen Makalelerde Bulunmas› Gereken Standartlara (Uniform Require- ments for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals Editors) uygun ola- rak haz›rlanm›fl olmal›d›r

6. Tüberküloz ve Toraks Dergisi Helsinki Deklarasyonu etik standartlar›na (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.html) uymay›
prensip olarak kabul eder. Bu nedenle insanlar üzerinde yap›lan tüm çal›flmalar- da, yaz›n›n Materyal ve Metod/Hastalar ve Metod k›sm›nda etik kurul onay›
al›nd›¤› belirtilmelidir. Çal›flman›n yap›ld›¤› hasta veya gönüllüler bilgilendirilerek onaylar› al›nmal› ve bu durum makalenin Materyal ve Metod/Hastalar ve Me- tod k›sm›nda yaz›lmal›d›r. Hayvanlar üzerinde yap›lan çal›flmalarda, yaz›n›n Ma- teryal ve Metod k›sm›nda çal›flman›n Laboratuvar Hayvanlar›n›n Bak›m› ve Kul- lan›m› K›lavuzu (www.nap.edu/catolog/5140.html) prensipleri do¤rultusunda yap›ld›¤› ve ilgili kurumdan etik kurul onay› al›nd›¤› belirtilmelidir. Gerek görü- lürse editör taraf›ndan etik kurul onay›n›n bir örne¤i yazarlardan istenebilir.
7. Yaz›lar›n hemen iflleme konulabilmesi için belirtilen yaz›m kurallar›na tam ola- rak uygun olmas› gereklidir. Editör ve yay›n yürütme kurulu yay›n koflullar›na uymayan yaz›lar›; düzeltmek üzere yazar›na geri gönderme, biçimce düzenle- me veya reddetme yetkisine sahiptir.
8. Gönderilen yaz›lar önce yay›n yürütme kurulu ve editör taraf›ndan de¤erlendi- rilir. Yay›n yürütme kurulu ve editörün onay›n› alan yaz›lar, isimleri gizli tutu- lan konuyla ilgili üç dan›flma kurulu üyesinden en az ikisinin olumlu görüflünü ald›¤›nda yay›mlanmaya hak kazan›r. Dan›flman belirleme yetkisi tamamen editöre aittir. Dan›flmanlar belirlenirken derginin dan›flma kurulu veya ulusla- raras› yay›n dan›flma kurulundan isimler seçilebilece¤i gibi yaz›n›n konusuna göre ihtiyaç duyuldu¤unda yurt içinden veya yurt d›fl›ndan ba¤›ms›z dan›flman- lar da belirlenebilir.
9. Yaz›lar›n gelifl tarihleri ve kabul edilifl tarihleri makalenin yay›mland›¤› say›da belirtilir.
10. Makaleler online makale de¤erlendirme sistemine kaydedilmelidir (www.tuberktoraks.org).
11. Yaz›lar, “Verdana” karakterinde çift sat›r aral›kl› olarak ve 10 punto kullan›la- rak yaz›lmal›, sayfan›n her iki kenar›nda 2 cm boflluk b›rak›lmal›d›r. Yay›n met- ni IBM uyumlu bilgisayar program›nda (Microsoft Windows, en az Word 98) haz›rlanm›fl olmal›d›r. Sayfalara bafll›k sayfas›ndan bafllayarak s›rayla numara verilmelidir. Numaralar sayfan›n sa¤ alt köflesinde yer almal›d›r. Ana metin ya- zar isimleri ve çal›flt›klar› kurumlara ait herhangi bir bilgi içermemelidir.
12. Yaz›n›n daha önce bir dergide yay›mlanmam›fl veya yay›mlanmak üzere gön- derilmemifl oldu¤unu ve gönderilen yaz›ya tüm yazarlar›n onay verdi¤ini bildi- ren, makaledeki isim s›ras›na uygun biçimde yazarlarca imzalanm›fl bir üst ya- z› makalenin kayd› s›ras›nda online de¤erlendirme sistemine yüklenebilir. ‹m-
zal› üst yaz› ayr›ca Ankara Üniversitesi T›p Fakültesi Gö¤üs Hastal›klar› Anabi- lim Dal› Cebeci, Ankara adresine gönderilebilece¤i gibi, scanner ile taranarak e-posta yolu ile kayaak@turk.net adresine veya 0312 319 00 46 numaraya faks arac›l›¤›yla da gönderilebilir. ‹mzal› üst yaz›da ayr›ca tüm yazarlar›n maka- le ile ilgili bilimsel katk› ve sorumluluklar› yer almal›, çal›flma ile ilgili herhangi bir mali ya da di¤er ç›kar çat›flmas› alan› varsa bildirilmelidir. Söz konusu yaz›- da çal›flmaya yap›lan tüm mali katk›lar ve varsa sponsoru da belirtilmelidir. Ya- zarlar ya da çal›flma sonuçlar› ile ilgili herhangi bir ç›kar çat›flmas› yoksa bu du- rum da bildirilmelidir.
13. Teknik yard›m, yazma ve düzeltme yard›m›, veri toplama, analiz vs. gibi konu- larda yaz›lara katk›s› olan; ancak yazarl›k kriterlerini tam karfl›lamayan kiflilerin tümü teflekkür bölümünde belirtilmelidir.
14. Daha önce sunulmufl bildiriler yer ve tarih belirtmek kofluluyla yay›mlanabilir.
15. Makalede kullan›lan k›saltmalar uluslararas› kabul edilen flekilde olmal›, ilk kul- lan›ld›klar› yerde aç›k olarak yaz›lmal› ve parantez içinde k›salt›lm›fl flekli göste- rilmelidir. Tüm metin boyunca k›salt›lm›fl flekil kullan›lmal›d›r. Uluslararas› kul- lan›lan k›saltmalar için “Bilimsel Bir Makale Nas›l Yaz›l›r ve Yay›mlan›r (http://journals.tubitak.gov.tr/kitap/maknasyaz/)” kayna¤›na baflvurulabilir.
16. Yaz›n›n bafll›k sayfas›nda, yaz›n›n Türkçe ve ‹ngilizce bafll›¤›, boflluklar da dahil 40 karakteri aflmayacak flekilde Türkçe ve ‹ngilizce k›sa bafll›k, yazarlar›n aç›k ad ve soyadlar› yaz›lmal›d›r. Çal›flmalar›n yap›ld›¤› klinik, anabilim dal›/bilim da- l›, enstitü ve kuruluflun ad› belirtilmelidir. Bafll›k sayfas›nda yaz›flmalar›n yap›la- ca¤› kiflinin ad›, yaz›flma adresi, elektronik posta adresi, telefon ve faks numa- ralar› yer almal›d›r. Çal›flma, daha önce bir kongre ya da sempozyumda bildi- ri olarak sunulmufl ise bu sayfada belirtilmelidir.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AUTHORS
1. Tuberculosis and Thorax is the periodical journal of Turkish Association of Tu- berculosis and Thorax and is published quarterly (March, June, September, and December).
2. The goal of the Journal is to present collective scientific knowledge via expe- rimental and clinical studies, reviews, case reports, short communications and letters to the editor to the readers to improve the scientific background.
3. The publishing languages are Turkish and English. All manuscripts should comply with the Turkish Language Institution dictionary and the Turkish Lan- guage Writing Guide Book (http://tdk.org.tr). Anatomic terminology should be based on Latin nomenclature. Medical terms, in daily use, should be writ- ten according to Turkish spelling rules. The words required to be written in their original language by the author are written within quotation marks.
4. When first mentioned in the text, microorganism names should be written with the full Latin names of the genus and the species. Both the genus and species names should be italicized. Later, the first letter of the genus should be capitalized while the species name is in lower case letters if the context makes the meaning clear (e.g. Streptococccus pneumoniae……. S. pneumo- niae).
5. All manuscripts should comply with “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” produced and updated by the Internati- onal Committee of Medical Journals Editors (www.icmje.org).
6. Tuberculosis and Thorax executes compliance with the Declaration of Helsin- ki Principles (http://www.wma.net/en/30publications/10policies/b3/index.
html). All manuscripts concerning human subjects must contain a statement in the “Materials and Methods/Patients and Methods” section, indicating that the study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. There should also be a statement of declaration about informed consent obtained from rese- arch subjects, and it should be placed in the “Materials and Methods/Patients and Methods” section. All manuscripts dealing with animal subjects must con- tain a statement indicating that the study was performed according to “The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” (www.nap.edu/catolog/
5140.html) with the approval of the Institutional Review Board, in the “Mate- rials and Methods” section. The Editor may ask for a copy of the approval do- cument.
7. The submitted manuscripts should conform exactly to the instructions in or- der to be reviewed promptly. The Editor and the Editorial Executive Board ha- ve the right to reject, to require additional revision or to revise the format of manuscripts which do not follow the rules.
8. Initial evaluation of the submitted papers is performed by the Editor and the Editorial Executive Board. The papers approved for reviewer evaluation are sent to three selected reviewers as blinded-manuscripts. The decision of ac- ceptance of the manuscripts needs at least two reviewers’ affirmative opini- ons. The Editor is the complete authority regarding reviewer selection. The re- viewers are mainly selected from National and International Advisory Board.
The Editor may decide to send the manuscript to independent national or in- ternational reviewers according to the subject.
9. The dates of submission and acceptation of the manuscript are stated in the end of the manuscript when published in the journal.
10. The manuscripts should be submitted via online manuscript evaluation system (www.tuberktoraks.org).
11. The manuscript text should be written in Verdana font, 10 point-type, doub- le-spaced with 2 cm margins on the left and right sides. The article should be prepared in IBM compatible programs (Microsoft Windows, Word 98 at le- ast). The pages should be arranged in numerical order beginning from the ini- tial page, and the numbers should be at the bottom right corner of every pa- ge. The main text should not contain any information regarding author(s)’s name and affiliation.
12. The author and the co-authors should sign a cover letter declaring acception of full responsibility for the accuracy of all contents in accordance with the or- der of authors. They should also declare that the manuscript is an original work that has not been previously published, and is not currently submitted
to any other publication. The cover letter should include contributions and responsibilities of each author, and whether there is a conflict of interest re- garding manuscript. If there is no conflict of interest it should also be stated.
In case of any financial contributions, the sponsors should also be denoted in the cover letter. The cover letter may be sent by fax to +90 312 319 00 46 or its scanned copy may be sent by e-mail (kayaak@turk.net) or submitted concurrently with manuscript submission.
13. All the entities that provide contribution to the technical content, data collec- tion and analysis, writing, revision etc. of the manuscript and yet do not me- et the criteria to be an author should be mentioned in the acknowledgement part.
14. The manuscript which has been presented previously as an abstract in any congress or symposium may be mentioned on condition with the statement of the date and the place of the meeting.
15. Abbreviations should be internationally accepted and should be defined ac- cordingly in the text in parenthesis when first mentioned and used in the text.
16. Title page of the manuscript should include Title (Turkish and English), run- ning title (Turkish and English, not more than 40 characters including spaces), Author(s), Institution(s) and Address for Correspondence with e-mail address, fax and phone numbers. Authors should indicate on this page whether the study has been presented previously as an abstract in any congress or sympo- sium.
17. Abstracts should be prepared in Turkish and English for all manuscripts except
“Letters to the Editor”. Abbreviations should be avoided in abstracts. Referen- ces, tables and citations should not be used.
18. There should be two to five key words complying with the Index Medicus Me- dical Subject Headings (MeSH) (www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/MBrowser.html).
19. Research Articles should include; Title, structured abstract (Introduction, Ma- terials and Methods/Patients and Methods, Results and Conclusion, limited to 300 words), and key words in Turkish and English, Introduction, Materials and Methods/Patients and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement and References. Research articles should not exceed 5000 words and 40 re- ferences.
20. The Editor’s approval is required before submitting a review article since revi- ews to be published are planned by the Editor.
21. The reviews should include; Title, unstructured abstract and key words in Tur- kish and English and the main text section. Limit the abstract to 300 words.
The number of references should not exceed 40.
22. Case reports should include; Title, abstract and key words in Turkish and Eng- lish, Introduction, Case, Discussion and References. Case reports should have a short introduction and discussion sections, and an unstructured abstract should be prepared as one paragraph. The number of references should not exceed 20.
23. Concise independent reports representing a significant contribution in the re- lated field may be submitted as a short communication. The maximum length of a short communication is 1500 words. Short communications should inc- lude title, an unstructured paragraph of abstract and 2-5 key words in Turkish and English. The main text should include a maximum of one figure and two tables. Number of references should not exceed 10.
24. The letters to the Editor is for letters that are addressing issues or exchanging views on topics arising from published articles or uncommitted subjects wit- hout original research interest. It should not exceed 1000 words and not inc- lude an abstract. The number of references should not exceed 10.
25. Figures and tables should be numbered according to the sequence of referral within the text. Each item should be cited in the text.
26. Each table should be prepared with double spacing on a separate page. Tab- les should have a brief title. Authors should place explanatory matter in foot- notes not in the heading. Explanations should be made for all nonstandard abbreviations in footnotes. The following symbols should be used for abbrevi- ations, in sequence: *,†,‡,§,||,¶,**,††,‡‡. Each table should be cited in text.

27. Figures should be either professionally drawn or photographed, and these items should be submitted as photographic-quality digital images. Figures should be submitted in a format that will produce high-quality image (for example, JPEG or GIF). Authors should control the images of such files on a computer screen before submitting them to be sure they meet their own qu- ality standards.
28. X-ray films, scans and other diagnostic images, as well as pictures of patho- logy specimens should be submitted as sharp, glossy, black-and-white or co- lor photographic images. Letters, numbers, and symbols on figures should be clear and consistent throughout, and large enough to remain legible when the figure is reduced for publication. Figures should be made as self-explana- tory as possible. For recognizable photographs of patients, signed releases of the patient or of his/her legal representative should be submitted; otherwise, patient names or eyes must be blocked out to prevent identification.
29. Type or print out legends for illustrations using double spacing, starting on a separate page, with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers or letters are used to identify parts of illustrations, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend.
30. When the author(s) has/have used a figure or table from another source, per- mission of the author and publisher must be obtained, the necessary printing permission document must be provided and the source referred to in the text.
31. References
Data and manuscript that have not yet been published should not be cited as reference. These should be stated in the main text as “author(s), unpublished data, year”.
References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text, tables and legends at the end of the sentences in brackets. List all authors up to six authors. For more than six authors, list the first six authors followed by “et al”. Journal na- mes should be abbreviated as listed in “Index Medicus” or in “ULAKBIM/Tur- kish Medical Index”. Note the following examples:
