Paragraph Analysis Revision
Writing Skills 2
• Paragraphing Principles
• A second principle you should consider is
UNITY. All the sentences in a paragraph must be about the topic sentence. Any sentence that does not directly or indirectly relate to the topic sentence ruin the unity of the
paragraph.
Writing Skills 2
• Both the major ideas and the minor ideas should be relevant to the topic sentence.
Major ideas should explain; minors must exemplify or clarify the topic sentence.
Writing Skills 2
The third principle of paragraphing is
DEVELOPMENT. Development is a vague term.
It is difficult to understand whether an idea is adequately developed or not. Everyone has a unique sense of 1the adequate” But if you
make sure that you have both major and minor ieas, you have a good shot at
developing your ideas.
Writing Skills 2
• A paragraph might include just one major idea or more. The topic senetence “I like
basketball primarily because of team play” is based on one major idea. The paragraph will focus on the fun of team play. If the topic
sentence is “I like basketball because of its pace and simple rules”, then there are two major ideas in the paragraph.
Writing Skills 2
• Although there are no rules as to the number of major ideas ina aparagraph. The general principle id “the less, the better” for
development’s sake. If your major ideas are hefty, then write about them in seperate
paragraphs.
Writing Skills 2
• The final principle is COHERENCE. The
senetences ans ideas in a paragraph should follow each other logically and naturally. If there are gaps between ideas, then the
paragraph lacks coherence. Coherence checks the logical development of ideas.
Writing Skills 2
• In short, a good paragraph relies on four major principles: Focus, Unity, Development and
Coherence.
• Adherence to these principles must be
manifested through paragraphs that are well structure.
• Structure means topic sentence, major ideas, minor ideas and conclusive statement.
Writing Skills 2
• Please study the principles and structure once again before the next module.
