INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE EFFECTS OF TURKISH – ARMENIAN RELATIONS ON THE REGIONAL POLICIES

(FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO PRESENT DAY) 12-14 May 2016 / BİTLİS

An international symposium entitled “the Effects of Turkish – Armenian Relations on the Regional Policies (From the 19th Century to Present Day)” is going to be held on 12-14 May 2016 in Bitlis by Prime Ministry Ataturk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History – Ataturk Research Center with the collaboration of Bitlis Eren University. Within the framework of the symposium, it is aimed that Turkish – Armenian relations will be analyzed in a historical, political, economic and socio-cultural way and contributions will be made to the neighborly relations between the two countries by addressing the 1915 events with documents.

Armenians, who have dispersedly inhabited the Caucasus, Western Asia and Iran since the ancient times in history, lived side by side and in harmony for centuries with the Turks who made Anatolia their homeland starting from the 10th century.

As a result of the effects of the nationalist movements caused by the French Revolution and the policies of the Western states to share the Ottoman territories, Armenians began to revolt. Armenians who increased the rebellious activities after the outbreak of WWI and collaborated with Russia in Eastern Front were compulsorily sent to regions of the Ottoman Empire which were safer and away from Russian influence with “the Tehcir (Relocation and Resettlement) Law” enacted on 27 May 1915. What transpired during the practice of the Tehcir Law were distorted and exaggerated in the following years and thus caused baseless allegations.

The unfounded allegations and accusations made by Armenia, which brings up the events during WWI, are still used for political purposes by other states against Turkey.

As a consequence of the end of the bipolar system in the rapidly changing world conjuncture, Turkey regards maintaining amicable relations with its neighbors in particular and the other states in the world in general as a priority of its foreign policy so as to have an effective position in the region and the international arena. To this end, Armenia and Turkey, the neighboring countries, signed the “Protocol on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations” in 2009.

The relations between the two countries which share the same geographical region politically and economically affect peace and stability in the region. Taking the geographical proximity into account, addressing the relations between the two countries in an academic context to protect peace in the region and to economically strengthen the two states boosts the importance of the symposium to be held.

It is expected that the papers will be based on new research and they will put forward new perspectives, Papers must be original and the abstracts must consist of at least 300 words. Papers must be considered as a piece of ongoing research and they are supposed to be arranged in a way to include the possible findings.
