Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of mirror therapy and brunnstrom treatment on wrist functions in hemiplegic individuals.
Method: 48 patients (21 males, 27 females) who were diagnosed with hemiplegia and mean age (59.71 ± 4.744) years were randomly divided into 3 groups (Mirror, brunnstrom, control group). 45 minutes traditional ftr to mirror group, 30 minutes mirror therapy to brunstrom group, 45 minutes traditional ftr, 30 min brunstrom method, 45 min traditional ftr program was applied to the control group. The rehabilitation program was implemented for 8 weeks, 5 days a week. Patients' cognitive functions before, during, and after treatment were performed with mini-mental state test, ambulation levels with functional independence scale, upper extremity muscle tone with Modified Ashword Scale, hand functions with House hand functional scale. Upper extremity motor evaluation with Fugly-Meyer test, upper extremity recovery level with Brunnstrom staging, hand performance with bedbug-block and 9-hole peg test.
Results: There was no significant difference between the groups' pre-treatment age (59.71 ± 7.744), height (168.63 ± 9.786) and weight (83.69 ± 10.910) ratios (p> 0.05). There was no significant difference in BT andDT values (p> 0.05), and there was a significant difference in BT and AT and AT and DT values (p <0.05). Mini mental test, functional dependence scale, and house hand functional staging scores improved at the same rate in all 3 groups between BT and AT (P <0.05). Brunnstrom hemiplegia improvement scores improved more in mirror group and brunstrome group than in control group (P <0.05). <0.05). The spasticity scores with MAS showed greater improvement in the brunstrom group compared to the mirror therapy and control group, while the mirror therapy group improved more than the control group (p <0.05). while the brunstrom treatment group showed more improvement than the control group (p <0.05). The wooden box block test and 9 hole peg test scores improved more than the mirror group and brunstrom group compared to the control group (P
<0.05).
Conclusions: In conclusion, the addition of mirror therapy and brunstrom treatment methods in addition to the traditional physiotherapy program can be used to increase hand functions in individuals with stroke. However, brunstrom treatment method was found to be more
effective than mirror therapy in terms of spasticity.
