Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) hosted the “Economic and Social Progress Workshop” for the discussion of the construction plan that will involve the area from Gazimağusa to Boğaz. The opening ceremony of the two day workshop took place on 18th October 2018 Thursday, at 09:30, at Raif Rauf Denktaş Culture and Congress Center. Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Minister of the Interior Ayşegül Baybars, Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources Erkut Şahali, Gazimağusa Mayor İsmail Arter, Cyprus Turkish Construction Contractors Association (KTİMB) President Cafer Gürcafer, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam,

İstanbul Technical University

TRNC Campus Rector (İTÜ-KKTC) Prof. dr. Ercan Kahya, EMU Vice Rector for Administrative and Technical Affairs Prof. Dr. Naciye Doratlı, city planners, bureaucrats and academicians were amongst the attendees of the workshop. Workshop plans to find out about the best practices at planning, increasing of the participation of the public and encouraging the consideration of regional, economic and social elements.

Criticism on Number of Universities

In her speech, Minister of the Interior Ayşegül Baybars said that the public features personal interests rather than the general interests of the public. Baybars stated that there is still chance for the construction

plan for Gazimağusa and

Yeniboğaziçi. Baybars said, “Higher education should not be a primary sector for the economy. There is

a lot of new private universities. However, the number of the universities is not important but the amount of information produced is.” Minister for Agriculture and Natural Resources Erkut Şahali said, “The legal legislation is not open for debate. However people are behaving as it is. There is a number of people who sees planlessness as an opportunity, but the short-term incomes are transforming into long-term troubles.”

Gazimağusa Construction Plan

Gazimağusa Mayor İsmail Arter stated that the obstacles in front of the construction plan works is the lack of bodily plan of the country. Arter said, “We aim to realize the construction plan in 2019 and I wish that the public participates more during the opine process. KTİMB President Cafer Gürcafer said the construction plans are not made for years and this caused a serious amount of losses for the country. Gürcafer stated that no healthy developments can be seen in a life without plan and underlined that the artisans are unhappy in planless cities.

“It Is Wrong To See Education as Economic Structure”

In his speech, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam said that İskele district is about to demolish because of conurbation. Prof. Dr. Osam stated, “Plan is not meaningful in our culture. Construction permits are given to agriculture areas and coastlines. I can not understand why TRNC has to be an education island. In order for this to happen, firstly academic production should

rise to prominence. There are only a handful of universities beside EMU that accomplished this. What kind of plan allowed 5 universities to be opened in Gazimağusa? These are direct proof of planlessness. Cities in Europe does not change for long years and the cities are blended with the city. TRNC higher education will keep contributing to the economy. However the sociological, psychological and demographical

structure is damaged.” İTÜ-KKTC Rector Prof. Dr. Ercan Kahya said he came to TRNC 6 years ago and the first element came to his attention was the lack of city planning. Prof. Dr. Kahya mentioned the importance of the value of Cyprus, its geographical location and its history. Prof. Dr. Kahya stated that the planning should be made by local people and accordingly with this unique culture.

BREAST SELF-EXAMINATION DEMONSTRATED

AT EMU

October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine and EMU Faculty of Health Sciences jointly organized a seminar titled “Breast Cancer Informing Seminar” on 18th October 2018 Thursday, at 13:30, at EMU Mustafa Afşin Ersoy Conference Hall. Under the moderatorship of EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora and Op. Dr. Tevfik Eker and Spc. Dr. Özlem Gürkut being the speakers, “How to Conduct Breast Control On Oneself? Practical Expression” and “Importance of Early Diagnosis – Treatment Process” subjects were discussed.

Importance of Self-Examination

Opening speech of the seminar was made by EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Nahide Gökçora. Prof. Dr. Gökçora mentioned about the messages given by pink ribbon that they wear during the seminar as, “Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives. Get in contact. Examine yourself. Consult a medic after the age of 40 and get low voltage x ray scanning. Give importance to preventive medicine and live a healthy life. Exercise, quit smoking,

lower alcohol consumption. You will significantly decrease the risk to have breast cancer.” Mentioning the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach by oncology, radiotherapy and surgical areas, Prof. Dr. Gökçora stated that they aim to show a practical breast self-examination of oneself in at the seminar.

“Cancer Type That Causes Most Death for Woman”

In her speech, Spc. Dr. Özlem Gürkut said that the subject of the seminar is very important however, people unfortunately does not show enough sensitivity to this subject in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Spc. Dr. Gürkut underlined the importance of health, since human beings do everything in their lives to live a better life and without health the human life becomes meaningless. Spc. Dr. Gürkut said, “According to GLOBOCAN 2012 data, 14.1 million new cancer cases has been evolved and 8.2 million deaths occurred related to cancer. Most diagnosed cancers in the world are lung cancer with 13%, breast cancer with 11.9% and with %9.7 colon cancer. On the other hand, the percentage of deaths caused by cancer are with %19.4 lung, 9.1% liver and 8.8%

stomach. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the cancer that causes the most deaths inside woman cancers. One out of four woman have breast cancer. The probability to have breast cancer for woman who has breast cancer in their family are 2-5 times more than other woman. 5-10% of the breast cancers are genetic. The most common ones are the mutations on BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.”

How to Conduct Self-examination

In his speech, Op. Dr. Tevfik Eker gave information about surgery and diagnosis, saying, “Knowing of how your breasts look and felt at breast self-examination increases the chance of recognizing any changes. The best period for conducting Breast Self-Examination are, between 5th and 7th days after the end of menstruate, same day of each month for women in menopause, after breast-feeding and a day before starting a new pillbox for the woman who uses birth control pills. The individuals should go to breast examination once in every 3 years between the ages of 20-39 and once a year after the age of 40 and must see a specialist medic. Individuals should have a mammography scan

every 1 or 2 years between the ages of 40-50 and this should be repeated once every year after the age of 50.” After the speeches, the attendees learned different stiffness and bumps on the model breast that is similar to a breast that has breast cancer, under the supervising of specialist doctors and EMU Dr. Fazıl Küçük Faculty of Medicine academicians.

False Facts

The following facts were featured during the seminar: -Test-tube baby practices does not increase the risk of breast cancer. -Today’s digital mammography’s causes much less exposure to radiation compared to old conventional mammography’s. -The most efficient treatment of breast cancer is not mastectomy nor removal of lymphatic glands as much as possible. -During breast cancer treatment, especially during the phase of chemotherapy, ozone treatment, high doses of B and C vitamin supports do not increase the successfulness of the treatment. E-strogen positive breast cancers are more sensitive to hormone treatment. They are not bad cruised.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE TRAINING FOR CHILDREN BY

EMU’S DR. FAZIL KÜÇÜK FACULTY OF MEDICINE

Assist. Prof. Dr. Gözde İyigün, lecturer at Eastern Mediterranean University’s (EMU) Faculty of Health Sciences, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department, has made exercise suggestions during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Assist. Prof. İyigün, stated that October was determined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to indicate the importance of early diagnosis and create awareness. She said: “In the United States of America (USA), one of eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer. While this rate is highest in Northern Europe and the USA, we observe that it is moderate in Western Europe and South Africa, and lowest in Asia”.

She Spoke of the Risk Factors

After remarking on the increase in the number of cancer cases in the Western countries for the last 25

years, Assist. Prof. İyigün said: “This increase is related to the increasing average of life expectancy, change of lifestyle (dietary habits, decreasing physical activity), increasing number of x-rays taken and the increase in hospital appliances. Breast cancer risk increases significantly with age and also, a first rate relation to a person with breast cancer is considered to be the most common risk factor. Women with multiple first degree relatives with breast cancer are 5 times more under risk than those without. Another vital factor increasing the risk of getting breast cancer is age. Advanced age is an important risk factor and women over 50 are 4 times more likely to get breast cancer than those under 50.

Importance of Exercise

Prof. Dr. İyigün emphasised that in addition to these irrevocable factors, the patient’s history of fertility,

socioeconomic level, dietary habits, hormonal supplement intake, use of birth control pills, and the use of alcohol and cigarettes are among the risk factors which can alter the ratio; and continued: “As this is the case, creating awareness concerning these risk factors, which can alter a one’s risk level of getting breast cancer, is of vital importance for taking precautions. Studies show that the risk is decreased for women who exercise. Taking 1.25 – 2.5 hours of double-quick walks weekly can decrease the risk of

breast cancer by 18% and longer walks only increase this percentage. Especially for women under the age of 40, it is widely known that exercise decreases the risk of breast cancer. For women who exercise 4 or more times weekly, it is known that the risk is 60% in comparison to women who do not work out. While exercising in the early ages can postpone periods for 3 years, it is known that a 1 year postponed period can decrease of breast cancer risk by 20%. We should exercise to maintain our health before it is too late”.

EMU FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES PROVIDED EXERCISE
