W ith the self-confidence o f a successful artist, th e good manners inherited from her family, the vitality o f a twenty-year-old and her own special childlike charm, Aliye Berger is one of the great characters of Istanbul and if you m eet somebody in Turkey who has a lot of artistic talent and great personality, as likely as not they will turn o u t to be related to Aliye.
Aliye Berger tells of t h e s t r i c t upbringing she and h e r fa m ily had in
their hom e on B uyukada. There was very little affection dem onstrated
between h er parents and their children, and she remembers her fa th e r as a
stern, bespectacled old man poring over his history books. When she was
very small she used to run away from her nurse to peep through the key hole at him in his library. L ater she would sit there while he worked, b u t dared not move a muscle for fear of being sent away. She was able to read and write English at a very early age, and found it frustrating that most o f her fa th e r’s books were in French, which was unintelligible to her. The only books t h a t she was able to enjoy was a set o f 25 leather-bound volumes o f Chinese prints. These fascinated Aliye, and she believes th at it was these pictures, seen when she was so small, th at had the strongest influence on her la te r work.
She also owes much to her sister, Princess Farineassa. H e a rt broken by the death of her husband in the 1940’s, Aliye Berger went to stay with her sister in London to try to forget her grief. She could neither eat nor sleep, until finally, in desperation, Princess Farinessa gave her several plates, and told her to m ake engravings to illustrate a small volume of poems written by Charles Berger. Already talented in drawing and paintiug, Aliye Berger took to engraving like a duck to water. After studying in London with John Buckland and W right, she returned to Istanbul in 1951 and gave her first one-woman show of 140 engravings. Since then she has given her own exhibitions of oil paintings, china inks and engravings in Paris, London, Vienna and various parts of Turkey, and she has partic ip a te d in many others all over the world. One o f her crown ing achievements was when the A lbertina Gallery in Vienna bought three of her engravings in 1964.
Aliye Berger lives alone in Istanbul in p a rt o f the old Im perial
Russian Embassy, which is now divided into apartm ents. P ainting and
engraving require a good deal of space, bu t Aliye’s home is small, and already filled with antique pieces of furniture, vases and ornam ents from her p a re n t’s home, her husband’s piano, and piles of her own paintings and prints. Nonetheless, she manages to find room to carry on with her work and always has a warm welcome and drink for her friends when they call on her.
