EDITOR'S NOTE
The Research Centre for International Political and Economic Relations of the Faculty of Political Science, Ankara University, offers for the kind perusal of the readers another issue of the Turkish Yearbook of International Relations, which first appeared in 1960.
This volume is prepared as a special issue on "Turkish-American Relations" to commemorate 200th anniversary of
its inception with the first-ever official visit of an American citizen, Captain William Bainbridge, to Ottoman capital in 1800.
The contributions in this volume were originally presented to a conference, organised by the Faculty of Political Science with contributions from NATO Information Centre and US Embassy in Ankara. A large number of people helped us to organise that gathering, gaining our gratitude. First of all, I like to thank Hon. Mr. W. Robert Pearson, the US Ambassador to Turkey, Prof. Dr. Celal Gole, Dean of the Faculty of Political Science, and Ms. Emel Uresin, former Liaison Officer for Turkey of NATO Information Office, for their outstanding financial and moral support.
My thanks also goes to the Organising Committee and student-members of the International Strategic Research Group of the Faculty of Political Science, who undertook day-to-day organisation of the Conference; Mr. Francis B. Ward, Mr. Jess Bailey, Dr. Ann Welden, and Mr. Hakan Yurdadogan of US Embassy, Cultural Affairs Department and Prof. Dr. Ersin Onulduran of Fulbright Commission for their enthusiastic support from the beginning; Dr. Cagii Erhan for his organisational skill and undertaking to co-edit this volume with me; and last but not least, to Contributors who, with their presentations at the conference and later revising their papers, made this volume possible.
Finally, there will be another publication coming out of the above-mentioned Conference; an edited volume to be published shortly by FrankCass-London. I also like to thank contributors of that publication as they were too originally presented to the said Conference.
I take this opportunity to invite, once again, Turkish and foreign colleagues to contribute to future volumes of the Yearbook.
