VIOLINS
By
E C E V lT T U N A L I *The
earliest violins were made by the Amati family in
the city o f Cremona in northern Italy in the 16th century,
and reached their pinnacle with those o f the celebrated
18th century violin m aker Antonius Stradivari.
Surviving violins of early vintage are still
preferred by musicians.
Over a period o f five hundred years the violin and its close relatives the viola, violincello, and double bass have evolved into their present forms and become indispensable fo r playing many types o f music. They are the descendants o f earlier genres o f folk string instruments o f various shapes and sounds used in Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Among the best known o f these first simple string instru
ments are the rebab, the kemangah, the ravanastron, rubebe, kit, kemenge and gique.
The Renaissance in Europe saw the use o f an early violin-like instrument known as the viol, and in the second half o f the 16th century, with the early devel opment o f classical music, the violin appeared. Smaller than the viols, the members o f the violin family attracted the attention o f musicians by their
clear sensitive tone and broad compass o f both notes and sound.
With minor changes the violin has remained much the same since it was first produced by Italian craftsmen in the 16th century. The ear liest violins were made by the Amati family in the city o f Cremona in northern Italy, and reached their pinnacle with those o f the cele brated 18th century violin maker Antonius Stradivari. In the early 19th century the fam e o f Italian violin m akers spread all over Europe. Surviving violins by members o f the great Italian violin making families o f Amati,
Örnek ola rak, Ekrem Zeki Ün’e ait S. Séraphin (Ve nedik) isimli keman , Rogeri (Brescia) markalı viyolonsel, Harutyun Hanes- yan’a ait Cerııti (Cremona) viyola, İstanbullu keman yapımcısı Şeref Arel’den satın alınan J. Guarnerius (Cremona) viyolonsel, Doğan Gü- venç’e ait T. Carcassi (Floransa) im zalı keman sayılabilir.

Another example is mentioned by N. Rüştü Büngül in his Encyclopaedia o f A ntiques published in 1939. He records a violin made by Antonius Stradivari in Cremona in 1 702 which was purchased on Büyükada island near Istanbul by a violin teacher nam ed Wondra Bey. He sold it to a company in Germany. Known as the Wondra Bey violin in referen ce sources, it dates from Stradivari’s greatest period.

In the 1900s a European
collector purchased one o f Guameri’s
three hundred or so instruments, a violin dated 1737, in Istanbul and took it to France. This violin, ivhich is referred to as the Turk ish violin in literature on the subject, was purchased by the English violin makers J.& A.Beare in 1986, and appeared in an exhibition in Cre mona in 1995. It is o f particular note because it was made in the same year and from the same wood as the violin used by the world famous violinist J Joachim .
Instruments played and cherished by many musicians over the centuries are not only valued fo r their matured tone, but fo r the memories o f music and musicians they embody, and which lend spiritual con fidence to a musician as be performs. •
