A renowned Turkish photographer:Sami Güner

The fam ous p h o to g rap h er, Sami Guner, died in a traffic accident on the way to Bolu province, on February 21.'

Sami Guner was born in Pristina, Yugoslavia in 1915. After graduating from Istanbul High School he worked in the Turkish Central Bank for 25 years. He was married with two children.

He was buried with a State funeral ce­ remony in Istanbul on 22 February.

President Turgut Ozal, in a message of condolence expressed great sorrow over Sami Giiner’s death.

photographer, his photographs were ex­ hibited in various exhibitions. He also gave one man shows. His colour and black and white photographs have been printed in numerous magazines, brochures, and also have been made into posters and postcards.

Since 1962,his photographs have been widely printed in calendars published in Turkey .He was a fury member in competi­ tions on several occasions.Sami Guner, who was very active in all branches o f photog­ raphy was considered the leader in his pro­ fession in Turkey.H e participated in na­ tional and international competitions and received several prizes. His photograhps can be seen in the books he published: Seljuk Carpets, Istanbul Archaeological Museum. Museum o f Turkish and Islamic Arts, Naval Museum, Museum o f Anatolian C ivilizations (A nkara), T urkish E m ­ broideries, St.Sophia, Blue Mosque (with other photographers), Turkey, Turks in Islamic A rt, Turkish Architecture, Culture and A n , Our Artistic W orld, and in a book on Istanbul.

Guner who dealt with all branches o f photography, actively promoted Turkey abroad with his exhibitions.

wonder whether you have fou n d the opportunity

o f seeing, travelling in or being acquainted with the

country that unites Europe and Asia, with her centuries-

old glorious past: Turkey the land o f many cultures,

decorated with the most impressive historical ruins and

monuments o f those glorious ages and epochs which has

been the cradle o f many outstanding civilisations

I have been wandering around this land fo r about-

fifty years with my camera.

Whenever l tramp through the eternal beauties o f

the rural scene, the m ountains, the valleys and the

villages o f A natolia; that is fa rfro m the madding cro wd

o f the noisy cities in which life has gradually grown in­

to an agony, a feeling ofjo y, euphoria conquers my sur­

roundings. I lose the sense o f time and leave the sorrows

and pessimism behind the silhouettes o f those moun­

tains, hills and fields. Here in this undisturbed silence,

I feel the growing sense o f happiness, o f m y soul being

emancipated from the lethal, gloom y effects and an­

tagonisms o f city life.

Then lsta rt walking. I walk and walk and walk...

Istanbul: The Golden Horn, silhouetted by flaming

sunsets... The Bosphorus, with her centuries-old facades

and mansions, and with her romantic glances and kisses

o f millions o f lovers. Istanbul, the city ornamented by

the glittering works o f art and masterpieces o f the

glorious era o f the Great Ottoman empire and the Young

Turkish Republic.

In 1983, Giiner was awarded the “ Presidential Certificate of Commendation, in 1987 the“ Turkish Promotion Founda­ tion A ward” , and in 1989 he won the Ministry o f Culture Grand Prize.

He also contributed to the preparation o f about 50 books on the historical and natural richness of Turkey.

Guner recently won the first prize in a com petition held in The P oeple’s Republic o f China with his photographs, “ Life on Mount Ağrı ” ,

file des photographes de profession en Tur­ quie, a participé à plusieurs conscours natio­ naux et internationaux et a reçu différents prix.

M.Sami Güner a reçu le prix de la Pré­ sidence de la République en 1983, le prix de la Fondation pour la Promotion de Tur­ quie 1987, et le grand prix du ministère de la Culture en 1989.

M.Güner a fortement contribué à la prom otion de la Turquie grâce à des expo­ sitions qu’il a organisées à l’étranger. Il a également contribué à la publication de près de 50 brochures sur les richesses naturelles et historiques de la Turquie.

M.Sami Güner avait récemment été classé premier lors du concours de photo­ graphies organisée en Chine Populaire, pour sa photographie “ la vie au mont Ağrı” .

Le célèbre photographe turc Sami Güner est mort le 21 février dans un acci­ dent de voiture près de Bolu.

Né à Prijtine en Yougoslavie en 1915, Güner a fait ses études au lycée “ Istanbul” et a travaillé pendant 25 ans à la Banque Centrale. La dépouille mortelle de M.Sami Güner a été inhumée à Istanbul au cours d 'une cérémonie officielle. Le président de la République M.Turgut Ûzal a publié un message exprimant ses condoléances pour le décès de M.Güner.

M.Sami Güner avait commencé très jeune à prendre des photos. Il a participé à plusieurs concours. Ses photographies en noir et blanc ont été publiées dans plusieurs magazines et brochures ainsi que sous forme de posters et de cartes postales. A partir de iyoz ses pnotograpmes ont été imprimées sur les calendriers publiés en Turquie.

Je me demande si vous avez déjà trouvé le temps

de visiter ce pays, trait d ’union entre ¡’Europe et l ’Asie:

la Turquie, ce pays au passé glorieux, aux cultures mul­

tiples abritant les plus impressionnants sites archéolo­

giques et monuments de tous les âges et de toutes les

civilisations.

Je parcours ce pays depuis 50 ans mon appareil

photo à ¡a main. Lorsque je vagabonde à travers les éter­

nelles beautés de ta nature, les montagnes, les vallées

et les villages d ’Anatolie (tout ceci est bien loin de la

folie surpeuplée des grandes villes bruyantes dont la vie

devient de plus en plus une agonie, je suis envahi par

un sentiment de jo ie et d ’euphorie. Je perds ta notion

du temps et laisse les peines et le pessimisme derrière

ces montagnes, ces collines et ces champs. Ici dans ce

profond silence, je sens monter le bonheur de mon âme

enfin libérée du joug atroce et de l ’antogonisme de la

vie citadine.

Je commence à marcher, je marche et marche et

marche.... Istanbul: la Corne d ’Or se découpant dans

le coucher du soleil... Le Bosphore avec ses façades sécu­

laires et ses harmonieux paysages verdoyants contraste

avec le vieux gris de ce passé fascinant en volant le oeuil-

lades romantiques et les baisés de millions d ’amoureux.

Istanbul, la ville enrichie par des oeuvres d ’arts resplen­

dissantes et par les pièces maîtresses de l ’époque glo­

rieuse du grand Empire ottoman et ta Jeune République

Turque.

Le "voyage dans le bleu" entraine le lecteur dans le rêve des criques cachées de la mer Egée.

Là, dans cet album, je me suis efforcé de réu­

nir les beautés naturelles, les trésors histori­

ques, le soleil, la mer, le sable, les paysans,

les pauvres, les riches, tous les habitants de la

Turquie avec leurs caractéristiques, leur tra-

ditons et leurs apparences.
