Ankara (Turkish Daily News)-Duygu Aykal, une des premières chorégraphes de Turquie est décédée la semaine dernière d’un cancer à l’âge de 44 ans à Lubbock, Texas.
Née en 1943, Aykal avait été diplômée du Conservatoire d’Etat d ’Ankara en 1963, s’était rendue en Allemagne de l’Ouest pour travailler avec Kurt Jooss et étudier la cho rég rap h ie et la danse m oderne. Après avoir rejoint la troupe du Ballet d ’Etat d ’Ankara en 1964, elle a remporté une bourse pour l’Ecole royale de ballet de Londres pour étudier la théorie chorégra phique.
Poursuivant ses études à l’Ecole de danse contemporaine de Londres, elle a assisté Léonide Massine dans ses produc tions et son livre “ Théorie sur la composi tion de ballet.”
A la même époque, elle a mis en scène divers ballets pour des programmes choré graphiques spéciaux avec le Ballet Royal et également avec le Conservatoire de Paris.
Aykal a ensuite étudié la Benesh cho- réologie, et a été diplômée de l’Institut Benesh en Angleterre.
De 1970 à 1973, Aykal fut l’assistante de Massine, et l’a aidé à mettre en scène “ Le Tricorne” pour le Festival de ballet de Londres.
Rentrant en Turquie en 1973, elle a fait la chorégraphie de son premier ballet “ Çoğul” (Pluralité) pour le Festival d ’art d ’Istanbul.

Après avoir travaillé pendant un an pour le Ballet d ’Etat d ’Ankara, elle a formé une troupe de danses folkloriques d ’Etat dont elle est devenue la directrice artistique en 1974.
Aykal a participé à la première Confé rence internationale sur la Chorégraphie à New York en 1978 et en 1984 elle s’est ren due en Chine et a donné des conférences sur son propre style chorégraphique et incor poré certaines de ses idées dans la chorégra phie des danses folkloriques chinoises.
Ses ballets sont: “ Çoğul” (Pluralité), 1973; “ Uzlaşma” (Compromis), 1973; “ Oluşum” (Création), 1974; “ Bulutlar nereye gider?” (Où vont les nuages?), 1977; “ İnsan, İnsan” (L’homme l’homme), 1979; “ Sanat Uzun” (L’art est long, la vie est courte), 1980; “ Insankiran” (Le Casse- hommes). 1981; “ Biz, Siz, O nlar” (Nous, Vous, Eux), 1983; et “ İnsancık” ( Petit homme), 1984.
Aykal s’est rendue aux Etats-Unis en 1984 pour des raisons de santé et un cancer fut diagnostiqué.
Elle laisse derrière elle un mari et trois enfants.

A n k a ra — Duygu A ykal, one o f Turkey’s first choreographers, died of cancer last week in Lubbock, Texas, aged 44.
Born in 1943, Aykal graduated from the Ankara State Conservatoire in 1963, travel ing to West Germany to work with Kurt Jooss and studying choreography and con temporary dance.
After joining the Ankara State Ballet Company in 1964, she won a scholarship to London’s Royal Ballet School to study choreo g rap h ic theory and S tep an o f notation.
Continuing her studies at the London School of Contem porary Dance, she assisted Leonide Massine with his produc tions and with his book “ Theory of dance composition’.
During this time she produced several ballets for special choreographic programs with the Royal Ballet and also with the Paris Conservatoire.
Aysal then studied Benesh choreology, graduating from the Benesh Institute in England.
From 1970 to 1973, Aykal became Massine’s assistant, helping to stage “ Le Tricorne” for London’s Festival Ballet.
Returning to Turkey in 1973, she choreographed her first ballet “ Çoğul” (Plurality) for the Istanbul Arts Festival.
After working for one year for the Ankara State Ballet, she set up a state folk dance company, becoming its artistic direc tor in 1974.
Aykal participated in the first Interna tional Choreographers’ Conference in New York in 1978, and in 1984 she visited China, giving lectures on her own choreographic style and incorporating some o f her ideas into choreography for Chinese folk dancers.

1979; “ Sanat Uzun” (Art is Long, Life is Short), 1980; “ Insankiran” (The Human Nutcracker), 1981; “ Biz, Siz, O nlar” (We, You, They), 1983; and “ İnsancık” (Little People), 1984.
Aykal travelled to the United States in 1984 for health reasons and cancer was diagnosed.
She leaves behind her husband and three children.
