Pendant la p ériod e des ic o n o c la s te s , so u s l'e m
p ereur C o n sta n tin V C o p ro nym e (741-775), e lle fut p a rtie lle m e n t d étruite, p uis restau rée de nouveau. On tro uve des in d ica tio n s re la tiv e s à ce sa n ctu a ire dans

a llu d e s to th is m etaphor. The present church w as w ith in the m onastery w h ich ca rrie d the sam e name.
The so u rce s note th at w ith th e p assag e of tim e the church fe ll into ruin and w a s reb u ilt d uring the
reign of Ju stin ia n by a m onk c a lle d Theodore. But
the church c o lla p se d again on the 6th of O cto b e r 557 in an earthquake, and Ju stin ia n b u ilt it anew in a la rg er and elab orate form . The new church, w h ich w as in th e b a s ilic a sty le , p rese rve d its old name.
In the ic o n o c la s tic period, it w a s p a rtia lly d e s tro yed by the em peror C o n sta n tin e V C oprom yem e and la te r w as repaired. T hereafter th ere is no inform ation
about the church in th e Byzantine so u rce s till the year 846. S u b seq u en tly it is noted that the church w a s not ca red fo r and fe ll into ruin and rem ained
untouched u n til the seco n d h a lf of the eleventh century.
In the beginning of the reign of Em peror A le x i
Com m ene, M a ria Douaina, the E m p ero r's m other-in- law, re b u ilt It in its p re se n t shape. The th ird son of
A le x i C om m ene prepared a grave fo r h im s e lf in the narthex of the chu rch and p rotected the church as its patron. But he w a s co m p e lle d to go to M ace d on ia
beca use o f d isa g reem en ts w ith his brother, loannes II, who w as Em peror a fte r the death of A le x i. He
b u ilt a church in V era, tra n sfe rre d the tom b and w a s buried there.

A la su ite de l'a ve nem en t au trô ne de l'e m p ereu r A n d ro n ic III, le M é th o ch ite tom ba en d lsg â ce e t fut e x ilé . Le m onarque co n fisq u é a lo rs l ’é g lis e et to u tes
s e s p ro p rié té s. Lorsque le. M é th o c h ite retourna d 'e x il, il trouva son p a la is brûlé, e t se m it à v iv re dans le m onastère com m e un sim p le m oine repentant. Il

G rand Legothete Theodore M e th o tite , w hose
palace w a s v ery near the church, took It over, under Em peror A d ra n ic o s II. This hu m an ist sch o la r, by using
a ll h is in te llig e n c e , love fo r a rt and fin a n c ia l re so u r c e s, repaired the chu rch and m o nastery v ery w e ll.
He a lso enlarged the church by adding an exonarthex, a p a ra ccle sio n and a sid e co rrid o r. A ls o by adding the
bea utiful m o s a ic s w h ich w e see today he m ade it a
m a g n ificen t building.

A fte r the co n q u e st of Istanbul by M ehm ed the C o n q u e ror on 29th M a y 1453. the e d ific e rem ained as
church fo r som e tim e. In the tim e of S u ltan B ayazit II. the V e z ir A tik A li Pasha co nverted it into a
m osque, and a m e d re sse w a s b u ilt ne xt to it. In 1180 A .D ., B e ş ir A ğ a of the Bâb-üs-Saade, b u ilt a school and a h o sp ice w h ere food w a s d istrib u te d to the

into a m useum . R epairs w e re undertaken and the m o s a ic s w e re uncovered by the A m e ric a n Byzantine
Institute.
The K a riy e b uildin g c o n s is ts of a m ain b uildin g
w ith its inn er and outer narthex on the w e s t sid e, a p a ra c c le s io n on the south, and a s id e c o rrid o r on
the north. The d ista n ce from the o u tsid e w a ll o f the
apse to the o u tsid e w a ll of the e x te rio r narthex is 28 x 28,5 m eters. O n the le ft and right of the apse in the m ain b u ild in g are a b a p tistery and a prothese
c e ll. The su rfa ce of the m ain b uildin g is 10,50 x 15
m e te rs and is co ve red w ith a cupola. The length o f the p a ra ccle sio n is 29 m eters. Due to the ad d ition s
that surround it on three s id e s, it re se m b le s the Fet- hiye m onum ent b u ilt in the period of Paleologus, w h ich a lso had ad d ition s. The w a lls of the main
b uild in g and a lso of the outer narthex are covered
w ith co lo u re d and veined m arble s la b s of g reat beau ty. The fin e m ihrab w h ich w a s b u ilt in the Turkish
period, is m ade from the sam e typ e o f m arble. S i m ila r d e co ra tio n s a r e , lackin g in the oth er pa rts of the building.
