BÖLÜM 2: PARÇANIN OKUNMASI
HOME SWEET HOME
For many British people, a house is the most important thing in their lives. In fact, 60% of the population doesn't live in rented housing. They would rather have their own houses, but prices are going up all the time, and many young people have not got enough money to buy a house. They live in small flats or in their parents' house (even when they are married).
Prices are especially high in the southeast of England. In the north, and in Scotland, prices are quite low. Young people often buy old houses, perhaps more than a hundred years old because they are not so expensive. But they have to spend a lot of time and money on repairs and decoration.
BÖLÜM 3: ÇEVİRİ ÇALIŞMASI

BÖLÜM 4: DİLBİLGİSİ ANALİZİ
1. For many British people, a house is the most important thing in their lives.
Burada “many British people: birçok İngiliz” ismine bağlıdır ve oluşan “for many British people: birçok İngiliz için” anlamını vererek “görüş” bildirmektedir. Bu kısımda alternatif olarak “as far as many British people are concerned”, “according to many British people” gibi dizilimler de kullanılarak “birçok İngilize göre, birçok İngilize sorulursa” anlamları verilebilir.
Cümlede bulunan “important: önemli” anlamına gelen bir sıfattır ve bu sıfatın içinde bulunduğu “the most important thing” diziliminde geçen “the most important” ifadesi bir “superlative” yapıdır. “Superlative” yapılar kısa sıfatların sonuna “-est” ekini, uzun sıfatların başına “the most” ifadesini getirerek oluşturulur ve en az üç kavramı “en yüksek / düşük derece” veya “miktar” olarak belirterek niteler. Cümlede geçen “the most important thing” ifadesi bu bağlamda “en önemli şey” olarak çevrilebilir. Ayrıca “superlative” yapıların başında article “the” kullanıldığına da dikkat etmek gerekir.
2. In fact, 60% of the population doesn't live in rented housing. Hatta nüfusun %60’ı kiralık evde yaşamaz.
Cümle “aslında, hatta, gerçekte” anlamına gelen “in fact” zarfı ile başlamaktadır ve bu zarf yerine “really, actually, indeed, as a matter of fact, as such” gibi ifadeler de kullanılabilir. Bu ifadeler cümleye “emphasis: vurgu” anlamı katan ifadelerdir.
Cümledeki “of” bir “preposition: edattır” ve “-ın, -in” anlamına gelerek sağındaki ifadeye şeklinde eklenir. Burada “the population: nüfus” ismine bağlıdır ve oluşan “of the population: nüfusun” anlamına gelmektedir. Cümledeki “doesn’t: does not” yapısı “simple present tense: geniş zamanda” olumsuz cümlelerde “özne ile fiil” arasına getirilerek kullanılan (...the population doesn’t live…) ve cümleye olumsuzluk anlamını katan yapıdır. “I, we, you ve they” zamirleri ya da “çoğul isimler” özne görevinde olduğunda cümleye olumsuzluk anlamı katmak için “do not: don’t” kullanılır. Yine aynı görevi yapan “does not: doesn’t” ise “he, she, it” zamirleri ya da “tekil isimler” özne görevinde olduğunda olumsuzluk anlamı vermek için kullanılır.
3. They would rather have their own houses, but prices are going up all the time, and many young people have
not got enough money to buy a house.
Bu ifade yerine “would sooner” ve “would just as soon” ifadeleri de kullanılabilir. Aynı anlamı veren “would prefer” ise devamına “to V0” alır.
Cümledeki “are going up” bir “Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense: Şimdiki Zaman” çekimlemesidir. “Present Progressive Tense: Şimdiki Zaman: am / is / are Ving” “konuşma anında gerçekleşen olayları” anlatırken kullanılır ve “-yor” şeklinde çevrilir.
Cümledeki “all the time” sıklık zarfı (adverb of frequency) “sürekli, daima, her zaman” anlamında kullanılan bir zarftır ve yerine “always, continually, invariably” gibi zarflar da kullanılabilir.
Cümledeki “enough: yeterli” ifadesi devamına “infinitive: to V0” yapısı alır. “enough + (noun phrase) + to V0” sıkça karşılaşılan bir dizilimdir. Bu bağlamda cümlede oluşan “enough money to buy: satın almaya yetecek para (satın alabilecek kadar para)” şeklinde çevrilebilir.
4. They live in small flats or in their parents' house (even when they are married).
Dolayısıyla cümlede oluşan “even when: -dığında bile” anlamını verir.
5. Prices are especially high in the southeast of England. Fiyatlar İngiltere’nin güneydoğusunda özellikle yüksektir.
Cümlede bulunan “especially” zarfı “özellikle” anlamı vermektedir; bu ifade yerine “in particular, particularly, notably, specifically” zarfları da kullanılabilirdi.
6. In the north, and in Scotland, prices are quite low. Kuzeyde ve İskoçya’da fiyatlar oldukça düşüktür.
Cümlede “are” yardımcı fiilinin ardından “quite low” ifadesi kullanılmıştır. Bu yardımcı fiil “be” fiilinin çekimlenmiş halidir.
7. Young people often buy old houses, perhaps more than a hundred years old because they are not so
expensive.
Cümledeki “often” sıklık zarfı (adverb of frequency) “sıklıkla, sık sık, genellikle” anlamında kullanılır. Bu zarf yerine “usually, generally, most of the time, mostly, frequently, oftentimes” gibi zarflar da kullanılabilir.
Cümlede “more than” ifadesi “-den daha fazla” anlamında kullanılmıştır.
Bu bağlaç yerine “as, since” bağlaçları da kullanılarak aynı anlamlar verilebilir. “Because” bağlacının devamına “tam cümle” getirmek gerekir.
8. But they have to spend a lot of time and money on repairs and decoration.
Cümlede “but” yerine “however, nonetheless, nevertheless, even so, on the other hand vs.” gibi “sentence adverbs: cümle zarfları” da kullanılabilirdi.
Cümledeki “have to” bir “modal: kip” gibi düşünülebilir. Modallar “yetenek, olasılık, gereklilik, rica, zorunluluk, tavsiye vb..” anlamlar taşır. “have to” modalı “zorunluluk: -meli / malı, -mek / mak zorunda” anlamı vermektedir ve yerine “have got to Vo” modalı da kullanılabilir.
Cümlede “a lot of: çok” ifadesi devamında sayılamayan isim alarak kullanılmıştır. Bu kullanımda “a lot of” yerine yine “çok” anlamına gelen “lots of, plenty of, much, a greal deal of, a good amount of, a large quantity of” gibi ifadeler de kullanılabilirdi. Ayrıca “a lot of, lots of, plenty of” üçlüsünün devamlarına hem sayılabilen hem de sayılamayan isim alabildiğini de bilmek gerekir.
Cümledeki “on” bir “preposition” (edat) görevi taşır ve “spend” fiiline aittir. “spend time / money on something: bir şey üzerine para / zaman harcamak” anlamı vermektedir.
