BOOK REVIEW

E. A. F. O. R. D., Zionism and Racism, Great Britain, Billing and Sons, [1979], 254 + ix pp.

"EAFORD" is the abbreviated name of the International Organization for the Elimination of Ali Forms of Racial Discri-mination, established by an International Symposium held in Tripoli (Libya) during 24-28, 1976. It was attended by close to 500 participants from eighty countries representing ali con-tinents. Papers, by invitation, were presented. A selection of those papers was published in book form, entitled Zionism and

Racism, and thus made available to others interested in

com-batting racial discrimination. The revievver of this book vvas also present at the Symposium, where the presentation of papers vvas follovved by several comments. Valuable information and insight emerged from these exchanges. Although some Western means of mass communication chose to ignore the Symposium, those of the Third World (and the Socialist bloc) attacbed due prominence to the issues discussed. Some of the contributers to this volume continued to publish further on the same theme. Hence, the discussions and the suggestions made at the Symposium have been a source of inspiration in vvays more than one. But tbe present book, vvhich contains some of the best papers presented there, is remarkable in terms of its commanding comprehensiveness, valuable information, deteiled erudition and academic persuasion. Printed tvvice before and novv a third U.S. edition being ready, Zionism and Racism seems to be the best reference book on the subject. French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic translations have also been prepared. Sri Lankan, Greek and Turkish versions are to follovv.

Dr. Anis Al-Qasem, vvho, in a brilliant article, exposed, once more, hovv racism counters vvorld peace, proposed the

Stefan Goranov, a Bulgarian Professor of History, proves that racism of Zionism is not an isolated phenomenon. Joseph L. Ryan, a Catholic clergyman, explores how Zionist leaders looked on Jews and Judaism. The celebrated Alfred M. Lilienthal analyzes how Zionists manipulated to induce immig-ration to Israel. Sami Hadavvi and Walter Lehn survey the tech-niques employed, before and after the establishment of Tsrael, to acquire land. Walter Lehn, in a separate article, shows that the Jewish National Fund is a Zionist institution which practi-ces, by design and by inteııt, discrimination against non-Jews. Nazih Qurah, from the Palestine Studies Institute of Damascus, counters the propaganda that Palestine was unpopulated at the beginning of Zionist immigration. A.C. Forrest's article is based on his field study of the Palestinian expulsion. Naseer H. Aruri, Chairman of Political Science at Southeastern Massachusetts University, shows how Israel's Oriental Jews have been subjected to social, economic and racial discrimination. Edward W. Said, who is Parr Professor at Columbia University, and Guy Bajoit, from the Catholic University of Lourain, Belgium, discuss the intellectual origins of imperialism and Zionism. A.M. El-Mes-siri emphasizes the distinctive traits of Zionist settler colonialism. Prof. Dr. Türkkaya Ataöv, of Ankara University, Turkey, in an attempt to assess the role of Israel in the service of imperia-lism, evaluates the state system of the Zionist entity, its domestic and foreign policies emphazising links between Israeli leadership and vvorld monopoly circles as well as this state's expansionist policy. Richard P. Stevens and A. Audah, as expected, are giving carefully documented information on Israel and Africa. S.G. Ikoku, from Nigeria, describes the conceptual and operational framevvork vvithin vvhich imperialist aid policies proceed in Af-rica. The last portion of the book deals vvith the critiques of Zio-nism. G. Neuburger's article is notable in terms of the differen-ces betvveeıı Judaism and Zionism. K.J. Herrmann's, G.V. Smith's and H.I. Hussaini's articles are ali on the Jevvish critics of Zionism. Mich Ashley expresses the opinion that Zionism is the obstacle to Middle East Peace.
