extraordinary collec tion with an equally extraordinary owner. Taha Toros began to c o lle c t d o cu m e n ts rela tin g to Turkey’s recent history while he was still an under g ra d u a te ov er sixty years ago. But what was to p ro v e a s till more valuable source o f in fo rm a tion were the reminiscences o f those who had played a part in events o f earlier decades and were then still alive. Taha Toros made notes as these first hand witnesses recounted their memories o f their past, and became a pioneer o f the oral history school which is regard ed as so important today. In this way he built up an invaluable archive o f historic material.
Bom in 1912, Taha Toros is a man quite as fasci nating as his archive. He comes o f an old and ven erable fa m ily fro m Çukurova near the M editer ranean city o f Adana, and is characterized by the

İstanbul Hukuk Fakültesi’nde öğrenimini tamamla dıktan sonra Ticaret Bakanlığı’na intisab eden Taha Toros, görevi icabı, bakanlık başmüfettişi sıfatıyla bütün ülkeyi gezmiş ve bulunduğu yerlerde folklor ve bölge tarihiyle ilgili belge ve bilgi toplamıştır. Tutmuş olduğu notlar 6000 sayfayı aşmakta ve ya yınlandıklarında folklor bilimi için temel bir kaynak olacaktır (O dönemlerde Macar besteci Bela Bartok ile Toroslarda yapmış olduğu bir araştırma gezisi Skylife dergisinin Mart ’96 sayısında işlenmiştir). Ancak Taha Toros, çabuk sahasını değiştirip üni versite yıllarında ilgilenmiş olduğu Tanzimat sonrası Osm anlı tarihi ve

Wherever he went, he collected inform a tion and documentation about local folklore and history. The notes he took cover over six thousand pages, and when they are published will be a major refere n ce s o u rce f o r the study o f f o lk lo r e (a n a c c o u n t o f the study to u r th rough the Taurus mountains by the Hungarian composer Bela Bar tok, who was accompanied by Taha Toros on his search f o r authentic Turkish fo lk songs, was pub lished the March 1996 issue o f Skylife).
Taha Toros later shifted away fro m the study offo lk lore to concentrate on late Ottoman history and the early history o f the Turkish Republic, which had interested him as a university student. It was then

generous and enterprising spirit displayed the peo ple o f that region. From his father, a modem m ind ed cleric, he received traditional values, and fro m such notable figures as Turkey’s Paris ambassador Salih M ü n ir Paşa, undersecretary f o r foreign affairs Ahmet Reşit Bey, İbnülem in M ahm ut Kemal Bey, whom he met as writers in the Turkish press, he a cqu ired the values o f the late O ttom an period. Meanwhile, as one o f the first generation to come o f age under the Turkish Republic, he was an uncom prom ising defender o f its principles o f westernisa tion, progress and secularity. rokrat, yazar ve sanatçıların hayatı hakkında bilgi kırpıntıları toplayıp binlerce zarflık bir arşiv oluş turmuş (Koleksiyonun zenginliğini göstermek için bir misal: Bu satırların yazarı, ailesi ile ilgili ve ken disinde bulunmayan bazı belgeleri burada bulabil miştir). Bizde biyografi türünün ne kadar ihmal edildiğini bilenler bu koleksiyonun kıymetini an larlar. Zaten Taha Toros ken
dini biyograf olarak tanımlı yor ve bu konudaki özensiz likten pek şikayetçi. Çoğu ta nınm ış kişilerin d oğu m ve ölüm tarihleri ansiklopediden ansiklopediye yalnış aktarılı yor, biografik bilgiler eksik veya hatalı kaydediliyor. Taha Toros, bazı gazetelerde, eleş tiri ve köşe yazılarında ve te levizyon sohbetlerinde tesa düf ettiği hatalardan şikayetçi. En son büyük bir kuaıluş ta rafından yurt dışında ölmüş meşhur bir ressamın sergisi için hazırlanmış dört sayfalık broşürde tam 18 hata tespit etmiş. Oysa kendisi bir “bilgi inhisarcısı” değil. Samimiyeti ne ve bilimadamlığma inandı ğı herkesle belge ve bilgilerini paylaşıyor. Yurt dışından ve taşra üniversitelerinden gelen başvurulara kapısı açık. Those who are aware o f the serious neglect o f biog raphy in Turkey will appreciate the worth o f such a collection. Indeed, Taha Toros regards himself p ri marily as a biographer, and deplores the careless attitude so common in this area. He complains that errors in b io g ra p h ica l in fo rm a tio n a b o u t well known figures o f Turkish history are often perpetu ated fro m one encyclopaedia to another, and that
even dates o f birth and death are m ore often wrong than not. Similarly, he notes f r e q u e n t in a c c u ra c ie s in the press and television, and cites the latest glaring example o f a fo u r-p a g e brochure about a celebra ted Turkish p a in te r c o n ta in in g no less than 18 fa ctual errors.
Yet Taha Toros does not keep his in fo rm a tio n to himself- Instead he shares his d ocu ments and notes with anyone g e n u in e ly in te res ted f o r research purposes. His door is open to applications f o r infor m ation fro m any university in Turkey or abroad, and fo r researchers based in Istanbul Taha Toros’s house is almost an obligatory staging post on the trail o f discovery. One o f the most memorable pleasures is to spend a spring day when the judas trees are bright with th eir p in k blossom at TahU B e y ’s house discussing the fa m ily tree o f one o r other

günü Taha Bey’in evinde, herhangi bir devlet ada mının aile şeceresini tartışmak pek büyük bir zevk tir. Ne var ki bazen üzülmediği de olmuyor değil: Kendi vermiş olduğu bilgi ve belgeleri kaynak ola rak göstermeden kullananlara ve kendisine bir te şekkür lütfetmeyenlere kırgın. Ayrıca yazılı ve gör sel basın Taha Toros’un yayınlanmış çalışmaların dan intihalde bulunmakta sakınca görmüyor. Zaten Taha Toros’un çalışmalarının çoğunun -her ne ka dar 29 kitap yayınlamış ise de- gazete ve dergilerde tefrika edilmiş olması bu tür olayları kolaylaştırmak ta. Neyse ki şimdi bunları kitap halinde toplu olarak yayınlama çalışması başlatılmış oldu.
Peki bu koleksiyon nasıl oluşmuş? Sahaflardan, es kicilerden, bit pazarlarından toplanan belge, mek tup, kupür, fotoğraf, gravür vb. dokümanlar kolek siyonun nüvesini oluş
turmuş. A yrıca Taha T o r o s ’un cid d iyetin e gü ven en bazı aileler evrakını kendisine tev di etmişler. Bunların arasında son h a life Abdülmecid Efendi’nin b e lg e le ri de bulunu yor. Bunu Taha Toros, 50 yıl boyunca devam ettiği arşiv ve kütüp hanelerde almış oldu ğu notlarla takviye et miş. Yurt dışına yap mış olduğu gezilerde de araştırmalarını sür dürmüş, arşiv ve kü tüphanelerde çalışmış ki, bunların arasında Vatikan arşivleri gibi
girilmesi pek müşkül olanlar bile var. Bilhassa yurt dışında yaşamış olan meşhur Türklerin izini sürmüş ve bu mealde Yahya Kemal’in Paris’te Closerie des Lilas kahvesinde devamlı olarak oturduğu masayı tespit etmiş ve bir plaket konulmasına ön ayak ol muştur. Bu arada öO’lı yılların başında görevle bu lunduğu Paris’te Porte de Clignancourt’deki bit pa zarının bir müdavimi olmuş, oradaki Beyaz Rus es kicilerinden pek ilginç kitap ve belgeler toplayabil miştir.
Ancak, Taha Toros’un hayattan kopmuş, kendini belgelerine adamış münzevi bir insan olduğu sanıl masın. Bir kaç yıl öncesine kadar, kendisi İstan bul’un sanat ve kültür hayatını yakından takip eder di. Her önemli açılışta elinde kadehi etrafındakilerle

Neither the press nor television have had any scruples about p la g ia riz in g his published articles and 29 books, especially since most o f the latter have been published in installments in newspapers and magazines. Now plans are underway to publish his collected works in book form .
His collection o f documents, letters, press cuttings, photographs, engravings and other material derives partly fro m secondhand book shops, ju n k shops and flea markets visited in the course o f many years. In addition, a number o f families have entrusted him with their letters and other documents concerning fa m ily members. archives, n otoriou sly difficult o f access, have opened th eir doors to Taha Bey. He has spent a considerable time fo l lowing in the tracks o f renowned Turkish f ig ures who lived abroad, discovering f o r example w hich ta b le Yahya Kemal habitually sat at in the Closerie des Lilas Cafe in Paris. A plaque has now been placed to mark the spot where this great 20th century Turkish poet spent so much time with his circle o f friends.
D uring his posting to Paris in the early 1960s, Taha Toros became a regular client o f the flea market in Porte de Clignancourt, and here collected many interesting books and documents fro m White Rus sian ju n k dealers. Yet it should not be assumed that
Taha Toros is a m an absorbed e n tire ly in his research and divorced from other aspects o f life. On the contrary, until age began to get the better o f him a few years ago he regularly attended concerts and stage performances, and was often to be seen at exhibition openings, glass o f wine in hand, joking

şakalaşırken onu görmek mümkündü. Ayrıca Mar kiz, Lebon gibi edebi kahvelerin geleneğini sürdür meye çaba göstermiş, bir ara Divan pastanesini me kan seçmişti. Nitekim bu satırların yazarı kendisiyle Divan’da tanışmıştı 1978’de. Bugün ise haftada bir, üniversite mensuplarıyle bir sohbet-yemekte buluş maktadır.
“Cumhuriyet’e kanat gerenler” nesline kendisi gibi mensup olan eşi Türkiye’nin ilk ceza hakimi olmuş, yıllarca “Experiment International” adlı uluslararası kültür dayanışma kurumunun Türkiye temsilciliğini üstlenmiştir. Üç torununun en büyüğü olan Har mony Toros bugün Paris’te uluslararası bir televiz yon kuruluşunda çalışmakta ve Paris’te, üniversite için hazırlamış olduğu Fransa’daki Türk işçileriyle ilgili tez, dedesinin çalışma masasında baş köşede durmaktadır.
B in lerce parçadan oluşan bu koleksiyon dan Taha T o r o s ’un nazarında en kıymet lilerinden biri Mustafa Kemal’in Latife Hanım ile halayına geldikleri Adana’da, Gazi ile be raber çek ilm iş olan fotoğraftır. Kendisi o sırada 11 yaşında idi ve Tarsus Gar pero nunda Gazi’ye ezber le d iğ i bir şiiri o k u muştu. İhtim am ile sakladığı diğer bir ob je ise Atatürk’ün vefa tından bir kaç ay ev vel Adana’ya yapmış olduğu son seyahatte kullanm ış old u ğu kahve fincanıdır. Bir
kaç yıl öncesine kadar telvesiyle birlikte saklanan fincan işgüzar bir temizlikçi tarafından yıkanmış. Koleksiyonculuğu kanser gibi çaresi olmayan bir hastalık olarak nitelendiren Taha Toros ömrü bo yunca topladığı bu arşivi torunlarına devrederek kültür tarihi araştırmaları için bir vakıf oluşturma çabasında. Yıllardır bu koleksiyondan yararlanmış, Taha Bey’in sıcak ikramı ve doyumsuz sohbetlerin den yararlanmış biri olarak bunu ancak alkışlayabi

with those around him. He made a valiant attempt to keep alive the tradition o f the literary cafés, and upon the demise o f M a rkiz and Lebon became a habitué o f D ivan Pastanesi f o r a while. That was where I myself first met him in 1978. Today he still continues to attend weekly get-togethers with a group o f academics.
His wife became Turkey’s fir s t w oman c rim in a l court judge, and the Turkish representative o f the international cultural solidarity organization Exper iment International. The elder o f their three grand children, H arm ony Toros, works in Paris f o r an international television company, and the thesis on Turkish workers in France which she prepared while studying at university in Paris stands in p rid e o f place on her grandfather’s desk.

A tatürk used during his last visit to Adana ju s t a fe w m onths p r io r to his death. It had c o n ta in e d the a ctu a l dregs o f that cup o f coffee u n til a zealous cleaning lady got hold o f it a few years ago. Taha Toros describes collecting as an incurable dis ease, and is now in the process o f ensuring that his immense collection remains intact by establishing a foundation f o r research into cultural history with his grandchildren as executors. This is good news f o r all the researchers and writers who have been received with such kindness and generosity by Taha Toros over the years, and who have enjoyed his ever fa s ti'
nating conversation. •
